Rebirth: An Original Short Story - Part 1 of ?

It was a day just like any other day.

In the east the sun began to show over the horizon of the harbor.

The sky was as blue as ever and a paltry amount of cirrocumulus clouds drifted through the troposphere.

Being six thirty, the dock hands had long already been to work on their loading and storing process that many of us neglect to think about as we enjoy the utility of our consumable goods.

It wasn’t unexpected when the city streets began to clump up with their daily congestion of commuters headed into work. The timeless tradition was nothing more than a time suck. This ritual was indiscriminate and equally frustrating to all involved and was caused by as many reasons as the numerous places they all aimed to arrive.

In the bed of one beat up blue pickup truck, a man was keeping a steady hold of of a teatering wooden wardrobe. He shared the space with as much of the rest of a mismatched bedroom set that the couple could fit in the confined space.

The man wore a pair of classic blue jeans with the usual worn look achieved from actual use rather than the manufactured fashion available for a higher price.

His shabby running shoes were snugly tied and he had on a well fitting t-shirt with an image of a hockey stick printed across the front. The man’s face was aged with years of working out of doors and hardened through the simple repetition of similar expressions that often crossed his countenance. Not surprisingly, his hair was fixed in a traditional manner styled by a few unaimed strokes of the comb each morning.

Inside the cab of the truck sat a woman equally matched in stature and appearance, but with a few softer touches generally suited to womankind.

She had one hand upon the wheel as she flicked the dial on the in dash radio receiver scanning for the local traffic reports. Her focus aptly shifted from the radio dial to the road and back again in quick succession as she kept her right foot resting readily over the break pedal.

This routine was all too familiar.

However, the route she was taking was not.

She had only been to their new apartment once before and she had merely ridden along as a passenger. The way was long forgotten and she did not remember most of the way to get there.

Scanning the road up ahead, she noticed the stagnate stoppage of cars and glanced at a print out map of the area's roads. Her eyes searched for a simple alternative way to get to their destination.

The man lightly drummed his fingers upon his knee as he slowly tapped his left foot.

He was in deep thought.

It was with reluctance that the couple suddenly got themselves into the situation that made moving a necessity.

Originally living outside of the city by about forty miles, they two traveled to town often for events but never imagined a life of living in the buzz of the center of commerce.

The move was precipitated by the acceptance of an office job. It was an opportunity that the young married couple couldn’t afford to pass up with their looming college debts that were about to come due.

The funny thing is, Logan thought, was that they incurred all this debt but found their degrees to be next to worthless having graduated during a sharp downturn in the economy.
