Dubai Dhows & Disney: The Shk Zayed Grand Mosque, Abu Dhabi

The third largest mosque in the world after the mosques in Mecca & Medina in Saudi Arabia.

Named after the founder and first President of the UAE, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.

The main dome is the largest mosque dome in the world: 85 metres high with a diameter of 32.8 metres.

The 5,625 m2 carpet in the main prayer hall. has been hand-knotted by about 1,300 Iranian craftsmen out of 35 tons of wool and 12 tons of cotton. With a total of 2,268,00 knots, the carpet is the largest in the world.

For two years running it was voted the world's second favourite landmark by TripAdvisor.

The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque has seven imported chandeliers from Faustig, Munich, that incorporate millions of Swarovski crystals.

The largest chandelier is the second largest known chandelier inside a mosque, the third largest in the world and has a 10 m (33 ft) diameter and a 15 m (49 ft) height.

The 96 columns in the main prayer hall are clad with marble inlaid with mother of pearl.

Three calligraphy styles — Naskhi, Thuluth and Kufic — are used throughout the mosque

As he wished, the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is also the last resting place of its namesake who passed away in 2004.

Over 100,000 tons of pure white Greek and Macedonian marble were used in its construction.

There is a modest dress code when you visit the mosque.
