Animal Series #39 - The White Wagtail (Motacilla alba)

The White Wagtail (Motacilla alba)

The white wagtail (Motacilla alba) is a bird that nest in large parts of Europe and Asia, and parts of North Africa. The species is considered a short-range bird, but can also act as a stand bird in the mildest parts of the range. The species migrates to Africa. It also nests to some degree in Alaska.

The white wagtail arrives in Norway in March-April, and goes south again around September-October. It is found throughout the country and is chosen as a county bird for Telemark.

The The white wagtail becomes approx. 16-19 cm long, characterized by the characteristic tilting or waging of the tail as it walks or runs along the ground.

It feeds on insects and prefers open areas where it is easier to see and catch swapping. The nest is built in cavities in rock walls and similar man-made structures.

This smart little wagtail is sitting on a wire waiting for the lawnmower to stir up some insects.
