The Wheel of Life

I came across this very interesting Art piece in one of the Buddhist Monastery. This painting was done on one of the wall of the Monastery and is called "Wheel of Life". I found it very interesting so read more, to understand what this picture exactly talks about.

In the Tibetan culture this painting is normally found at the entrance of the Buddhist Temple. It is said that this painting was made by Lord Buddha himself as a gift to one of the king. This painting depicts the continual cycle of life of we sentient beings. The picture has the center hub, then the spokes and the rim all gripped in the mouth of the Lord of Death. In the 6 spokes the upper ones show happiness and peace while the lower ones depicts suffering and pain. At the hub there are 3 animals, A snake, Cockerel and a Pig symbolizing hatred, ignorance and attachment which we are always being pinned around into, the 3 destructive emotions that keep coming back to us again and again.
The outer part of the hub is again split into 2 parts if we see one is in white and the other in black with different images. The images on the white side represents the happier actions we take in our lives and the ones on the black side are the wrong actions we take in our lives.

The outer rim of the wheel displays 12 pictures which represents the course of our lives.

Blind woman - Ignorance
A Potter - Compositional Action
A Monkey looking out of the window - Our Consciousness
People in a Boat - Name and Form
An Empty house - Perceptions
A Man and Woman embracing - Contact
Arrow piercing an eye - Feeling
Man Drinking Liquor - Attachment
Monket picking fruit - Grasping
Pregnant Woman - Existence
Childbirth - Birth
A Corpse - Ageing and Death.

The Wheel indicates the continuous motion of Life and Death and how we are binded with the sufferings of existence and their causes.
There is a moon and clouds above the demon which Buddha is pointing at, where he is saying that if we follow the path as suggested by him we can attain liberation.

What I understand from this picture is that we mankind have always been looped into pain and suffering through our actions. We need to understand the root cause of our problems, attachments, greed, ego and break this cycle. Life is a continuous cycle and we keep going round and round in this vicious cycle., following a path of righteousness only can lead us to liberation.
