Art Attack! #119: Boy Drinking Tehpeng/Iced Tea Emote! 🥃

Hey Steemit!

We're back again with another Art Attack! If you're new to the series, this is where I share my drawings and the process behind them. A behind-the-scenes look at my artwork, if you will. This is not to say that I'm very good at art, or that I'm a professional in any way. In fact this is the opposite, and serves as a reminder to how I first started, and lets me track my progress too!

So if you weren't aware, I've been streaming on Twitch for quite some time now and it's been fun trying out new games and making new friends in chat and with other streamers too! And I was fortunate enough to have loyal viewers whom enabled me to get Twitch Affiliate only a month after I started streaming!

I also celebrated my 1 year anniversary of streaming back in Feb 2022!

Anyway, Twitch affiliates get the benefit of having channel points and anyone in chat can redeem them during the stream if they have enough channel points. And since I'm an artist I thought I'd reward my loyal viewers who have amassed a ton of points with some free artwork!

Of course, it doesn't come cheap and my viewers will need at least 150,000 channel points to get it! It seemed like an impossible number at the time, but now my moderators have hoarded so much points it's insane.

So the second person to redeem this was actually one of my streamer friends, tehpeng (which means iced tea here in Singapore)! He goes by tehpeng12 on Twitch and is a very loyal lurker on my channel. His initial prompt for me was just "TEHPENG CARTOON" and I had no idea what that meant but then he thankfully changed his mind to an emote of him drinking tehpeng and waving so I got to work on that.

I drew this live on-stream and with his input we got a sense of what kind of hair he wanted since I've never really seen what he looks like before. And we of course went with the traditional tehpeng in a plastic bag since it's the most iconic form of tehpeng in Singapore and Malaysia.

So after he decided that he wanted my Tacocat avatar on his shirt to promote me (which I thought wa really sweet since it's going to be an emote of his) this was my initial sketch:

It was a little rough, but I didn't really know how else to draw a boy with this kind of hair style since he wanted something simple and not like crazy anime hair.

So after some adjustments and outlining, we get this!

The hand was tough, but I think I managed to do alright. Especially for the hand holding the bag of tehpeng. I thought it looked pretty good actually! And the colour on the tehpeng came out really well too! I tried to make it look more "plasticky" with the shine on the bag so it would have a bit more volume to it rather than looking flat too. Then I coloured the rest of him and we get this!

I think the outlines were a little thicker than I would've liked especially with the fingers, but overall it looked pretty alright! Looking back on it now I probably would've changed the hair a little bit and try to make it more dynamic looking and less like a helmet? Maybe something along the lines of this type of hair:

Anyway, here's the timelapse:

I think I've improved more since I did this piece back in Sep 2021 though so I probably could do a better job now. But then again, it's a commission so if tehpeng was fine with this I guess it's alright. Maybe if he ever wants me to remake this I wouldn't mind, but for now I still have a whole queue of requests to do!

Thanks so much for reading!
