Art Attack #145: Adorable Mayuri Shiina from Steins;Gate! 🕰 TU TU RUU~

image.png

Hey Steemit!

We're back again with another Art Attack! If you're new to the series, this is where I share my drawings and the process behind them. A behind-the-scenes look at my artwork, if you will. This is not to say that I'm very good at art, or that I'm a professional in any way. In fact this is the opposite, and serves as a reminder to how I first started, and lets me track my progress too!

If you missed the last couple of posts, I started a new series where I use this template to draw different characters based on suggestions from my viewers on Twitch!

image.png

I decided to make a channel redemption so my viewers could use their channel points to get me to sketch a character from their favourite series! I would do a quick sketch on stream, and then polish it up after the stream on my own time. This was back when NFTs were still a thing and I was thinking of venturing into it, but needed a series of characters so I thought this was a good starting point.

Anyway, this request was made by one of my moderators who goes by mel_on_cake on Twitch! She's a big fan of the Steins;Gate series and wanted me to draw Mayuri Shiina!

I've never watched or played Steins;Gate before but I have heard about it from Sean who said it was one of his favourite anime of all time! All I know about the series is it involves some mind-bending time travel stuff and I'm a fan of that genre so maybe we'll give it a watch some time?

The only thing I know about this girl is apparently she's the girl who goes TU TU RUU~
I have no context of this clip/sound effect but have heard about it in memes and stuff and was even requested to try and replicate it on stream!

After looking for some references I thought Mayuri looks really cute and relatively simple to draw though, so I sketched this on stream:

I gave her the hand raising pose since that matches her pretty well and she doesn't really have a signature pose as far Mel knows. For the background I wanted something simple-ish, and I realised she has a pet thingy called Upa and thought this logo I found would make for a good background:

But then I decided against it since she would be covering most of it and it wouldn't be seen anyway. So I decided to draw a clock instead since the show is about time travel. But I wanted a stylised clock so I went with a vintage-style analog clock to kinda match the logo.

image.png

This is what the first logo from the series looks like if I'm not mistaken, and I wanted to replicate the style of it but make it cleaner in a sense?

Anyway, the sketch looked pretty solid so it was time to outline! I didn't want a pure black outline so I went with that grayish blue from the chibi version.

Then it was time to colour! The colours were pretty simple since her outfit is pretty simple too. Her hand being raised felt a little empty though so I drew Upa and had her hold it so it would give her a reason to have her hand up, and I think it works.

image.png

After that it was mostly done. I drew and coloured in the clock face which turned out even better than I expected! I used some textured brushes to give the clock face some detail rather than just a plain white and it looked pretty good!

image.png

I was debating if I should add in the clock hands since I realised I forgot about it but once I added Mayuri back it didn't seem like it was that important anymore.

I thought it looked pretty good; with clean and nice colours and the background matching her but also not upstaging her in a way since it was also relatively simple. Maybe I should've edited the transparency a bit so she would stand out more, but I wanted the roman numerals to be seen clearly so I left it as it is.

Here's the full timelapse:

Overall she's quite a simple character to draw but anime characters in general are pretty simple and I couldn't add much since I wasn't familiar with the character or series. I thought it turned out pretty great regardless!

If you're interested, I do draw on stream sometimes and you can even claim free artwork if you get enough channel points! Come hang out with us on my Twitch channel!
