Art Attack! #95: Appa, yip yip! 🐏

Hey Hive!

We're back again with another Art Attack! If you're new to the series, this is where I share my drawings and the process behind them. A behind-the-scenes look at my artwork, if you will. This is not to say that I'm very good at art, or that I'm a professional in any way. In fact this is the opposite, and serves as a reminder to how I first started, and lets me track my progress too!

So if you missed the last couple of posts, I shared about my new experiences with Procreate, the new drawing app I was trying out. I went onto Youtube looking for some helpful tutorials and came across a really cool channel called Art with Flo and tried a couple of her videos from her You Can Draw This series such as this one:

It turned out really well and I loved the colour palette she used and how easy it was to follow along with her! It also inspired me to create other pieces with this airplane window style and I went on to do this piece:

So I thought of drawing another one and as I'd been listening to a lot of lofi compilations at the time while working on my art, I got inspired to draw Appa and the gAang flying outside the window! It was actually this very video that inspired me.

If you're not familiar with Avatar: The Last Airbender, it's an amazing series by Nickelodeon and was first aired in Feb 2005 to July 2008. It's set in an Asiatic-inspired world in which certain people can telekinetically manipulate one of the four classical elements—water, earth, fire, or air—through practices known as "bending", inspired by Chinese martial arts. The only individual who can bend all four elements, the "Avatar", is responsible for maintaining balance among the world's four nations, and serves as the bridge between the physical world and the spirit world. It's actually really in-depth and has amazing world building for being a "kids show" and has a lot of important lessons and values in it. Also the fighting scenes and everything is incredibly well-animated it's astounding. And is also exactly why it's my favourite show of all time.

So it only made sense that I draw a pieced based on Avatar and I followed pretty closely to Flo's sunset landscape but I changed the colours to a pre-dawn sky instead. And of course included Appa, the flying bison with little outlines of the gAang on his back.

Here's what it looked like in the end:

I'm actually really happy with how this turned out! I was kinda iffy on the colours so I referenced the background from Animal Crossing New Horizons for the colours and I think it came out really well! The clourds kinda looked like cotton candy though but it's okay. I was trying out the cloud brush in Procreate and it's pretty cool!

Here's the timelapse:

This one was definitely easier than the Among Us one I did, since I followed pretty closely to Flo's tutorial, which was honestly quite a relief since I was pretty tired from the previous pieces I did. But it turned out great and I can't wait to try out more airplane window art pieces!

Thanks so much for reading!
