Lighting a bee smoker can be a challenge for the beginning beekeeper. Keeping one lit and smoking for an extended period of time can be a challenge for even the most seasoned of beekeepers.
Burning Old Dark Comb
Now that I'm several seasons into beekeeping I find that I have this really dark old comb. Many beekeepers claim that it is not good for the bees and should be rotated out of the hive. Well, then... what do you do with it? It doesn't melt down like fresh wax. It becomes kinda papery and less like wax.
One article I found online (that I cannot find again) told of a guy that uses the old dark comb in his bee smoker. This material catches flame very well making it easy to light. It also smolders very well so it keeps a smoker burning longer. In this video I talk about that process and show my method for lighting the smoker.
