🗞 Why Are Tezos, Lisk, Binance Coin Beating Bitcoin so far in 2020?
Over the weekend Bitcoin (BTC) bulls showed impressive strength as the price punched through $10,000 for the first time in 2020. Interestingly, not only Bitcoin forks have been performing well recently, in fact, many altcoins are actually outperforming Bitcoin. The most recent notable performers are Tezos (XTZ), Lisk (LSK) and Binance Coin (BNB).
Since the start of 2020 Tezos has surged 118% and Binance Coin 120%. Meanwhile, Lisk has kicked its rally into high gear, surging 450% this year. These movements call for analysis.
🗞 IBM Blockchain VP: Every Dollar Spent on Blockchain Yields $15 on Cloud
Enterprise blockchain is a catalyst for further spending at Big Blue, according to Jerry Cuomo, IBM’s vice president of blockchain technologies.
"It is driving additional spend,” Cuomo said. “When you look at the direct attribution of the actual dollars spent on blockchain, we are seeing that for every dollar spent, $15 is spent on other cloud services.”
The back-of-the-envelope math offers a revealing glimpse into the storied tech company’s current thinking on blockchain. Cuomo’s revenue figure comes as IBM works to bring enterprise blockchain closer into the company’s sprawling cloud offering. Some commentators have described the move as a reprioritization or even consolidation following the dissipating hype surrounding distributed ledger technology (DLT).
🗞 FinCEN: Social Media Crypto Projects Can’t Ignore Money Laundering Risk
The deputy director of the United States Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) says the cryptocurrency sector must not abet a “slide backward” in money laundering prevention.
.FinCEN deputy director Jamal El-Hindi made his remarks during a speech at the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association 20th Anti-Money Laundering (AML) and Financial Crimes Conference in New York City on Feb. 6.
FinCEN won’t allow AML oversight to “slide backward”
El-Hindi opened his speech noting the particular complexity of the securities and futures industry, which comprises a dense web of transactions and interactions between inter-related parties.
🗞 Inside Chainalysis’ Multimillion-Dollar Relationship With the US Government
It started with a $9,000 data software contract for the FBI in 2015.
But just five years later, Chainalysis is now the cryptocurrency-tracing equivalent of Palantir, the data analytics company flush with lucrative government software contracts. Chainalysis is, right now, doing millions of dollars worth of business each year with the U.S. government, dwarfing its competitors in the young industry of blockchain surveillance.
The company is by far Uncle Sam’s leading crypto analysis contractor by spending and has become the go-to firm for 10 federal agencies, departments and bureaus.
🗞 Japanese Official Calls for Urgent Development of Digital Yen to Counter China
The head of the banking and finance systems research commission at Japan's Liberal Democratic Party, Kozo Yamamoto, said today that the country should create a digital yen in two to three years.
Reuters reported on Feb. 10 that Yamamoto said that plans for its central bank digital currency (CBDC) should be included in the government’s mid-year policy guidelines. He explained that digital currencies could quickly spread in emerging economies and help China — who is working on a CBDC — advance its digital hegemony. Because of this, he said that development of the digital yen must be quick:
“The sooner the better. We’ll draft proposals to be included in government’s policy guidelines, and hopefully make it happen in two-to-three years. [...] If each country manages to control flows of money with their own (digital) currencies, that could prevent a big swing at a time of crisis and stabilize their own economy.”
