OST of the Day #33: Steven Universe - Steven's Shield ๐ŸŒŸ

Hey Steemit!

If you're unfamiliar with this series, basically I share a soundtrack and my thoughts about it, and I highly recommend listening to the song while reading! ๐Ÿ˜Š

So I know all the OSTs I've posted have all been from various video games but some TV shows have excellent soundtracks too! I recently started watching Steven Universe and I was really amazed at how good it sounded!

If you've never seen/heard of Steven Universe before, it is an American animated television series created by Rebecca Sugar (the writer for Adventure Time) for Cartoon Network. It premiered on May 21, 2013 with its pilot, then on November 4, 2013 with its first season.

Plot-wise, it is the coming-of-age story of a young boy, Steven Universe (voiced by Zach Callison), who lives with the Crystal Gemsโ€”magical, humanoid aliens named Garnet (Estelle), Amethyst (Michaela Dietz), and Pearl (Deedee Magno Hall)โ€”in the fictional town of Beach City. Steven, who is half-Gem, has adventures with his friends and helps the Gems protect the world from their own kind. The themes of the series include love, family, and the importance of healthy interpersonal relationships. Books, comics and video games based on the series have been released, and a television film was released on September 2, 2019.

I've heard so many good reviews of Steven Universe from Youtubers I follow on Twitter and I managed to catch a few episodes while I was on holiday in Vietnam a couple months ago! I really enjoyed the art style and when I saw it was on Netflix I decided to give it a shot! And I'm so glad I did because I fell in love with the soundtrack in the very first episode.

The song I want to share today was the first song from this OST that I looked up, called Steven's Shield!

This song plays towards the end of the very first episode, called Gem Glow! In this episode, Steven is disappointed that his favorite ice-cream sandwich brand, Cookie Cat, gets taken off the market. He soon cheers up upon discovering that the Gems managed to get hold of some of the last remaining Cookie Cats, which he comes to believe may be the key to activating his gem.

Here's a short clip:

There are actually so many songs I like in this clip alone; like the one that plays while Pearl is explaining about gem weapons, or even the little tune while Steven rearranges them in the kitchen. But there's just something about Steven's Shield that stands out a little more to me.

The way it starts out all calm and peaceful, with a xylophone forming the melody and the chiptune harmony, before culminating in a rendition of the main theme when Steven produces his Shield. It's so lighthearted and fun; a perfect way to introduce the show and its characters.

I read that this song was also the very first song that was composed in the soundtrack; by 2 of my favourite composers Aivi and Surasshu! Aivi Tran was the very first pianist I listened to on Youtube many years ago. Her covers of video game songs (and her originals as well) are so amazing and unique. After I remembered she was the composer for Steven Universe I realised how familiar the songs sounded. They each had a unique charm to them that was so Aivi. It's no wonder I loved so many pieces in the soundtrack!

I really liked that throughout the entire soundtrack you can hear that each of the main characters has their own theme (or leitmotif), which changes slightly depending on the situation. Pearl is often accompanied by a piano, Garnet by a synth bass, Amethyst by a drum machine with electric bass and synths, and Steven with chiptune tones. There are so many scenes where their themes intermingle so well together that I will definitely share more of in the future.

Anyway, if you like piano covers, or piano music in general, I'd strongly recommend checking out Aivi's Youtube channel. She doesn't really update anymore but her older videos are still on there and they're amazing!

This was one of my favourite covers from Aivi. Man I remember listening to this soo many times wishing I could play like her.

Thanks so much for reading!
