In December 2014 he was runner-up of the first Qatar Masters Open with a score of 7 out of 9 (the champion was Yu Yangyi). In January of 2015 he was second in the 77th Tata Steel Tournament with 8½ of 13 points, the same as Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, Wesley So and Ding Liren, and half a point of the winner and world champion, Magnus Carlsen. In July of that same year he revalidó again its position like champion of the Netherlands, with 5½ of 7 points, one more than the second classified, Loek Van Wely. Viswanathan Anand
In 2015, Anand was able to return to the top several times. At the beginning of the year he won the classic part of the Zürich Chess Challenge.
