Hong Kong To Walk #7 – Hong Kong Science Museum to see the mummies

Hello everyone! Welcome to the Hong Kong to walk volume 7. Remember last time we have visit the Hong Kong Museum of History? Not sure will it gain your interest in history and culture. And this time, I would like to continue my culture journey, but let us change from the area of history to science. Yes, this time we will visit the Hong Kong Science Museum.

The Hong Kong Science Museum was operated in year 1991, located in 2 Science Museum Road, Tsim Sha Tsui East, Kowloon, Hong Kong. The permanent exhibition area is about 6,500 square metres with more than 500 exhibits, and over 70 percent of them are interactive exhibits. And the museum’s vision is using informal science learning for general public by the state-of-the-art, innovative and multi-disciplinary exhibitions, exhibits, activities, shows, and outreach programmes. Besides the permanent exhibitions, the Museum regularly presents special exhibitions on a wide variety of topics related to science and modern technology.

And this time, I am visiting the museum for this special exhibition “Eternal Life – Exploring Ancient Egypt”

Do you remember the last Hong Kong to Walk? We have visited the Hong Kong Museum of History, and the location of the Hong Kong Science Museum is just opposite to the Hong Kong Museum of History. So, in terms of the method to go, you guys may reference the last post, and I will not say too much here. However, when I arrived the entrance of the Hong Kong Science Museum last week, I still got some surprise, as there were so many people.

The exhibition this time was jointly presented with The Trustees of the British Museum. British Museum borrowed over 200 exhibits including the mummies and the coffin. Maybe you guys would have a question that this kind of exhibition should be in the area of history or culture, what is the connection with science? The reason is the method of analyzing the mummies.

In the past, the only method to investigate the Egyptian mummies was to unwrap the mummies, and which will damage their fragile remains. And now, the advanced sophisticated imaging techniques allow us to virtually explore their wrapped bodies, which help us to eliminate the needs of disturbing their coverings. This exhibition employs the latest Computerized Tomography (CT) scanning technology to study the Egyptian mummies in the British Museum’s collection, and which allows researchers to gain a new insights into the funerary traditions in the Nile valley.

As flash light is prohibited in the exhibition, to avoid damaging the exhibits, I have not taken too many photos and even I have, the photo seems quite dark. However, I still want to share some to you guys. First, when we enter the hall, we will see a video which including some animation to introduce how Ancient Egypt treat death and the imagination for the world after death.

And then it comes to the main part of the exhibition - mummies. This is “Nestawedjat”, it was wrongly judged as a male at the past. And thanks to the latest Computerized Tomography technology and she got vindicated, she was a female dead between the ages of 35-49.

And there are a lot of lithographs, art objects in the exhibition. You can understand more about how serious the Ancient Egyptian treated death and the world after death.

Other than the exhibits item, there are also some games which introduce the technology level for the Ancient Egypt and the science behind it.

To be honest, it is always so funny to see the Ancient Egypt history and it just had too many secret on it. And just feels like we will never understand all of them. I hope your enjoy the exhibition and hope we can visit it again.
