This week I get to be the guest judge of @svashta’s Constrained Writing Contest #12, in which I get to pick the theme!!! I am honored that @svashta would allow me to read all the entries, and pick the best of the best.
I love to read the entries to this contest, because each week every writer has a chance to create a story with the writing constraint, and each story is different. Anyone can enter the contest at any time, and if you want to be a judge, let @svashta know.
This week’s theme is inspired by the movie, “Stranger Than Fiction”, featuring Will Farrell, and Emma Thompson, in which Will Ferrell overhears Emma Thompson narrating his story.
In the movie, there is a scene in which Will Ferrell’s character resets his watch, and Emma Thompson’s character says,
“Little did he know that this simple, seemingly incautious act, would result in his imminent death.”
Later, in the movie, a literature professor makes a big deal about the phrase, and it becomes the turning point in the movie.
Will Farrell’s character knows that the ending of his story will be his death, and of course, he then tries to prevent it.
My theme for this Constrained Writing Contest is for the writers to use the phrase, “Little did he/she know”, somewhere in a fictional story. You can use it at the beginning, middle, or end of the story. You only need to fit it in there somewhere.
The word count will be 250 words or more.
I can’t wait to see all the different entries. With the talent here on Steemit, I know that this will be a tough one to judge. Have fun!

Here is my example Story for this week’s Constrained Writing contest.
The Knight of the Light
Satilla Kershawz strolled down the white, satin, carpeted path that lead to the illuminated alter. A golden casting box sat upon its cushioned throne, and was surrounded by pearls and shimmering precious jewels.
The light from the Royal Moon streamed like a laser beam through the ceiling, and reflected across the prayer stone; capturing its rare beauty.
Little did she know; her vote would decide the next high-ranking officer- the Knight of the Light.
It had come down to the Lord Rakalis of Kizan, and the Duke of Grady, Malcolm Peral. The Duke promised prosperity to the people of Granfalloon, and Lord Rakalis promised strength and protection. She knew one could not come without the other.
If only they could rule together, but that was not the way of the land. There could be only one Knight of the Light. This Knight would command all the armies, all the commanders, and all the private citizens.
As part of the Royal Shield, Satilla was commissioned to vote with great decisiveness, and come to the most logical decision.
It was true in her youth, she had favored the young Duke. His charm was enough to make any girl blush. He was wealthy, and had traveled the ten moons. But, Lord Rakalis offered the people hope. He was offering to protect the land with his own armies; which were too many for one to count.
For that protection, the people would have to sacrifice the land’s resources to tend these armies, and as it were, the last invasion from the Fallen Front, had depleted their possessions, and the soldiers were not properly prepared for the next attack.
What good would come of prosperity if all the resources are pillaged? And what good is protection, if they would not have enough reserves for their own?
Could the armies of Granfalloon be revived with the prosperity of the Duke’s promises? Or could Lord Rakalis’ armies be enough to defend the planet, and in return bring prosperity to the land?
She signed the ballet and placed it in the box. She hoped she made the correct decision.
Which one would you choose?
