Announcing Project Bigwaves : Curation For The Nigerian Community

Project Bigwave

From working individually to coming together as a team, one of the fastest growing communities on Steemit is finally getting some of the attention and rewards it deserves.

Why Now?

According to this report, Nigeria has finally broken into the top 10 most active countries on Steemit with Lagos coming in as the third most active city, climbing above New York and London!

A few months ago, there were only a handful of Nigerian Steemians scattered across the platform, doing their bit to grow themselves and the Nigeria community through meetups, closed circuit mentoring, and various growth plans. With these individuals seemingly doing fine for themselves, there has been an effort to bring everyone together and really build the community. It feels exciting to see that within this very short time, members of the community have been able to identify themselves and also identify more with the community.

With 91,880,032 Internet users as at Dec, 2016 (47.9% of the population), the potential for more growth is staggering. However, one thing that affects authors on Steemit is the lack of visibility for so many posts and the Nigerian community isn't immune from this; in fact, it is greatly affected by it.

Even though posts from this community are in English, not every content from its members will resonate with the wider Steemit audience, thus the need to have Nigerian curators who understand this and can go in search of these quality posts to give them the rewards they deserve.

The Team

The team of curators include @ehiboss, @gbenga, @onequality, @ogoowinner, @destinysaid, and @fisteganos. These curators have been identified by @donkeypong and appropriately trained to effectively carry out the task.

The curators are also being supported and mentored by Steemit veterans; @donkeypong, @hanshotfirst, and @infovore

Thanks to @xeldal, we have received a 30,000 SP delegation to @onequality for use as a part of Project Bigwaves. This means that votes are being placed with the @onequality account only and we hope to get more delegations to other curators to further help.

The Guidelines

For posts to be eligible for curation by Project Bigwaves, a few guidelines need to be adhered to. The following are a few of them:

  1. Posts must be by Nigerian authors only. This project has been setup to grow the Nigerian community and so we will be focusing on Nigerians only.

  2. Only original content. Please make sure sources are linked properly. Plagiarism is strongly frowned upon so if you just "copy and paste", you shouldn't expect to get any reward.

  3. Posts must have the #nigeria tag. Using this tag makes it possible for the curators to find your posts. It is very important so make sure to use it.

  4. A single author may be upvoted only once every 24 hours. This is to make sure that the reward is spread evenly across board.

  5. The higher the quality of your post, the higher the power of our votes! We are not out to reward just anything but quality. The better the quality, the better for the community.

  6. We would not be voting on any post @cheetah or @steemcleaners comments on.

How You Can Help The Project

1.) Support the authors we find, if you like their work. We are working hard to get them noticed and rewarded, but then it’s important for them to become established in the community.

2.) Leave comments on deserving posts and interact with the authors. More often than not, authors appreciate the comments even more than the money. A good comment could go a long way in helping them feel welcome and also provide some encouragement to continue working hard.

3.) Support the curators. Do not forget that the members of Project Bigwaves are scouring the entire community for worthy posts and are thus writing fewer posts themselves. When you see their posts on Steemit, assuming you like those posts, please do not forget what they are doing for this community.

4.) Support the project by delegating some Steem Power. If you'll like to donate/delegate some Steem Power to Project Bigwaves, please contact @donkeypong on steemit.chat

5.) Support the project by joining the trail for @onequality by logging into your account on Streemian and allocating a portion of your votes to follow @onequality.

We hope you agree that Project Bigwaves is an important addition to Steemit in our quest to make Steemit more diverse, and more representative of different authors, including the ones from our fast-growing Nigerian community. We can encourage people to post about what interests them. Instead of following trends, they will be driving Steemit’s natural expansion.
