If you have been following my series on Learning To Knit with @sweetpea, by now should have your needles and yarn all prepped and know how to cast on your first row of stitches. If you are new to my series, I’ll add the first few additions to get you up to date below. Today’s post is a little more fun, since in this session, I’m actually going to show you how to do a knit stitch – that’s it, we’re finally knitting!
In case you missed the first few entries, you can find them here:

Now, I have put a little video together for you that demonstrates how to do a knit stitch, step for step, you’ll find it below. In case I move a tad too fast for you however, I have listed the instructions further down as well.
How To Do A Knit Stitch (Garter Stitch)
Learn how to do a knit stitch with these simple steps.
- Cast on your first row of stitches. You can learn how to do this HERE.
- Taking your right needle, slip it through the back of the very first stitch, to form a X.
- Take your yarn/wool and move it behind both needles, and then around the back needle, placing it in the centre of your X.
- Pull the yarn that is around the tip of the right needle down and through the stitch on the left needle to create a new loop ('stitch') on the right needle.
- Now for something new! Slip the new stitch and the stitch from the left needle to which it is connected completely off the tip of the left needle. It will now be on your right needle – and you have just knitted a stitch!
- Repeat the action until you have knitted all of the stitches.
Feels pretty awesome right? In fact, you know enough now to start knitting a simple scarf, or even squares for a blanket! Stay tuned for my next entry, which will show you how to cast off.
