Farm Update: Progress on the Wall(s) of Paul

So continues the wall of Paul, which is honestly several little walls. He spent quite awhile moving rocks and building terraces, hauling ass and getting stuff done at a surprising pace. We are impressed by what @pauliepro accomplished and excited for his return. The above shot is a shot from below, all the rock walls you were see were built by @pauliepro, with some help from John.

Making terraces sounds complex but it's all just paying attention to the natural way land wants to flow while making often irregular shaped flat areas for garden beds. Then the plan is to drop bird enclosures on the new terraces to start fertilizing through their waste. There are already birds on these terraces, actually.

It's best to level an area to set the wall and this is how John does that. As you can see, the boulders force him to work around it, which makes for cool effects. A note, the mountains here in Acapulco are actually just big piles of boulders.

He moved the rocks and placed them strategically, often using the support of big boulders to make terraces like this one.

@pauliepro built the walls, filled them with dirt and added some peat moss in the top layer to amend the soil. It gave the ducks something nice to walk on as an added bonus.

The pile of boulders already moved once that they were picking from to build the walls. Now depleted.

This is a close up shot of a terrace in the works.

Here's a bit more proof that Acapulco's mountains are really just big piles of quartz stuffed boulders.

The terraces are held together by dirt, gravity and eventually roots. They won't last forever and will need to be repositioned periodically but they will last a very long time if done right.

Most terraces are built between boulders because they provide some of the best support.

All mixed up and ready for a round of birds.

DSC_0313.JPG

Certainly one of the more unique styles of gardening.

This is how those smaller boulders start, broken up by dynamite or machine.
