OST of the Day #41: Stardew Valley - Winter (The Wind Can Be Still) ⛄

Hey Steemit!

OSTs are really underrated but they're so good, so I thought I'd share a song a day and my thoughts about it! I highly recommend listening while reading! 😊

So in my previous post, I mentioned that I'll be writing about winter-themed songs for this whole month in preparation for Christmas and the New Year! To that end, I thought of a perfect song for today from one of my favourite games of all time, Stardew Valley! Have a listen:

So just to recap, Stardew Valley is an indie farming simulation RPG developed by Eric "ConcernedApe" Barone and originally published by Chucklefish. The game was initially released for Microsoft Windows in February 2016, with later ports being released for OS X, Linux, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation Vita, iOS, and Android.
In Stardew Valley, the player takes the role of a character who, to get away from the hustle of an office job, takes over their deceased grandfather's dilapidated farm in a place known as Stardew Valley.

It's a simple premise, but there's so much in-game content like planting crops, raising animals, mining, and making friends with the other villagers, which trigger unique cutscenes for each person! The concept is similar to games like Harvest Moon and Animal Crossing, the gameplay in Stardew is pretty different.
I find Stardew so much more addictive because there's always stuff to do! And now that there's a multiplayer mode, you can even play with friends! It's definitely a good game to just chill, even though you're always racing against the clock, trying to get everything done within the day.

I've posted about a Stardew song only once before, which should be a crime because this game (and soundtrack) is amazing! It's been a while since I played, but ConcernedApe recently released a huge new update to the game, with a new farm layout, pet, clothes, amenity and so much more! I haven't tried it out yet but I'm so excited!

Anyway, the song for today is called The Wind Can Be Still, and it's the song you hear on the first day of Winter. I think that is a perfect name for this song and you'll see why.

The song starts off with a pretty high-pitched melody from what I presume is a theremin (at least that's what it sounds like to me), later joined by an electric piano with the harmony. The electric piano then takes over the melody at 0:51, and the bass kicks in at 1:00 giving the song some build-up. Some synth notes then come in at 1:13 with the second melody before trading off with the electric piano again. The theremin comes back at 2:06 and carries the melody to the end, with synth backups.

The entire song lasts less than 3 minutes but it's so...moving, in a way. The tempo is pretty slowed down compared to the upbeat rhythm of Spring and Summer, and it very much suits the chill vibes of Winter. In the game, Winter is when you can relax, since crops don't grow during this month. For me, I use Winter to build up relationships with the NPCs, or go fishing and mining. You'll find that without farming, you have so much free time on your hands to just slow down and enjoy the game. It really helps that the music is so calming, and the scenery is gorgeous!

I think the first half of the song being played in minor key makes it seem a bit solemn, like you're sad to see your crops die, or you feel alone and you second guess your decision to move out to your grandfather's farm thinking, "what am I doing here?" Or "is this the right path for me?" But then the bass kicks in, and the song takes on a different vibe, just reassuring you that it's okay to feel a bit lost, and you're not alone because there're so many other nice people in the town!

Not gonna lie, I legit teared up the first time I listened to this song because of all those feels. I know this song is very different from other Winter themes and is probably not very Christmas-y, but that's exactly why I chose it. It's awesomely different; just like this amazing gem of a game. Thank you ConcernedApe, for all the feels and for all the work you've done.

Thanks so much for reading!
