Home of the Atruel - Flash Fiction

Long ago the Megrath appeared in the skies of Trelia, the massive beasts consumed every creature in their path - no race was safe from their destruction.

Before long the desperate beings of Trelia were all united by the ancient race now known only as the Atruel, and for over two years the Atruel held the races together and kept us all alive.

But as time drew on it became clear to the Atruel that victory would never be ours, not until more was known about these hostile invaders.

The Atruel met with the leaders of all races and explained the situation and their final plan to eventually save Trelia, the war could not be won at least not yet - and for Trelia to succeed many will have to be sacrificed.

Their logic was clear either we all die now or we make a deal with the Megrath, so the leaders agreed to take the deal arranged by the Atruel.

Firstly the Atruel agreed to willingly offer themselves when asked one by one to be fed on by the Megrath until none of their people were left and secondly, only then can the Megrath feed on the other races of trelia - but they must never remove too many of one race, this allows the races of Trelia to survive until a time does come when finally the war could be won.

What the Megrath didn't know is that the Atruel were magical beings capable of many things, one of those being telepathy, the Atruel were willing to sacrifice themselves but as they were about to be killed they shared all they knew and saw - and the remainder of their people would keep a record of all they learned, safe in the Home of the Atruel.

The Atruel had told the other races about the ancient prophecy so that the knowledge to win is never lost to time, one day in the years to come a being of Trelia would be willing to sacrifice everything they have to beat the Megrath.

Since the Megrath took his younger sister and last living relative, Emrin no longer feared the ravenous beasts that plagued his world.

As he sat crouched overlooking the overgrown ruins of the home of the Atruel, no one had dared set foot in the forbidden lands for generations - the punishment from the Megrath was to end the family line of any who entered.

But Emrin no longer had any cause to fear the Megrath, they had already slaughtered his entire family and now he had nothing left to lose but his own life.

He shifted, staring anxiously at the overgrown temples that lay below.

He knew the risks of coming here and he was willing to suffer the consequences, he had nothing left to lose.

At least in learning what, if anything the Atruel had discovered about the Megrath - he might be able to save the lives of the thousands of people who still have loved ones left.
