History
The researchers earlier thought that the over 7000 cultivars of apple originated from the European species wildwood (Malus sylvestris). New research shows that the apple's main ancestor is the Central Asian species Malus sieversii. One does not know when the apple came to Europe, it is possible that it came along the trade routes, probably originally from Asia, already in early times, the fruit was considered a drug that could prolong life.
In addition to depicting apple fruit, the word "apple" has also been used for all kinds of fruits in several European languages. This has led to more apples in our stories than we have strictly covered. The forbidden fruit that Adam and Eve ate off today are usually called an apple, and the yellow quince who sowed the splits between beautiful Greek gods has also become a battle's apple.
In northern mythology, Idunn watched a number of apples that the gods ate off to stay young. Apples are also left as playful or killing fruits, among others in C.S. Lewis' novel The dream of Narnia and the fairy tale of Snøhvit. Wilhelm Tell is known to shoot an apple placed on the son's head in two with an arrow from his arm chest. Scientist Isaac Newton developed his theory of gravity because he saw an apple falling from a tree.
A recent story tells about Johnny Appleseed (John Chapman), who in the 19th century walked 160,000 km² and planted apple trees, which gave food and livelihood to several generations of settlers.
The apples are coming along nicely, but they still have a couple months before they are ripe enough to eat.
Stay healthy, an apple a day keeps the doctor away. (but don't chew too many apple seeds)
