*Fresh Turmeric is a member of the Ginger family has has very similiar health benefits.
The main compound in turmeric is Curcumin, this is what gives it its yellow color, and its this substance thats responsible for the amazing health benefits. Curcumin has powerful antioxidant effects.
In a recent study of 60 depressed patients results showed that curcumin was as effective as prozac in alleviating the symptoms of depression.(US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health April 2014)
In the Western hemisphere arthritis has become a common ailement. There are several different types of arthiritis but most involve some sort of inflammation in the joints.Curcumin has been shown to be an anti-inflammatory aid. I drink turmeric in hot mint tea or as this milk drink to help me with joint pain - hands. Over the year that I have been taking it, I have definately felt a difference in my hands, they don't ache half as much and I have radically reduced the Advil for pain relief, which no doubt my liver is thankful for!
BLACK PEPPER - why you should use this with Turmeric
Black pepper is an important ingredient to golden milk because when you combine black pepper and turmeric, you increase the curcumin about a thousand times; resulting in your bodies ability is able to absorb it quickly and more efficiently..
GOLDEN MILK DRINK
1/2 a cup of water - filtered if possible
1/4 cup of organic turmeric powder or fresh root and grate
1/2 teaspoon of organic ground pepper.
INSTRUCTIONS:
Mix all of the ingredients together in a small pot, stirring over medium heat. Eventually, the mix becomes a paste, chill in the fridge.
GOLDEN MILK
- 1/4 teaspoon of turmeric paste (from fridge)
- 1 cup of almond milk
- 1/4 cinnamon ( another anti-inflammatory compound)
- Organic, honey for taste.
- Small handful of almond flakes (optional)
INSTRUCTIONS:
Mix all the ingredients together over medium heat except the honey.and almond flakes. Do not allow it to boil, keep stirring.
Pour into mug and add a bit of honey for taste - decorate top with almonds for a little crunch drink as soon as it's cool enough.
If using fresh tumeric - strain
Fresh turmeric adds a 'bright yellow' flavor to this drink, whilst dried turmeric can be a good substituted when fresh is not available. Keep in mind that dried turmeric will settle to the bottom of the mug, so stir well before drinking.
