Food Adventures #002: Jiro Shabu

It has been about 3 weeks since my husband(@branlee87) and I started blogging on Steemit and to celebrate his first cash out, we decided to have a nice shabu shabu dinner at Jiro Shabu. Unfortunately the branch in USJ10 Taipan was closed (not sure temporary or permanent) so we drove to Damansara Uptown's branch instead.

Corner shoplot, very easy to spot

Located in a food central area, there are many other delicious restaurants within walking distance. There is also a new mall called the Starling which has a nice outdoor mini-park situated on the top floor.

We reached there when it just opened so we were the first ones there. The place was warm and inviting and the seatings were spacious. Just like the Taipan branch, they have fishes on the wall.

We ordered the Deluxe Shabu for 2, with pork belly for RM69.90. We were served with a vegetable basket, fish balls, beef balls, fried tofu skin, fish paste, 2 eggs, a platter of thinly sliced pork belly, and a choice of noodles or rice.

In one corner of the restaurant, you'll have a few choices to make your custom dipping sauce.

The both of us went for the usual Sukiyaki broth to go with our meal. To give the soup more flavor, we added in the vegetable basket.

While the soup was boiling, we cracked our eggs into a small bowl and beat them to mix the yolk and whites to be made as our dipping sauce. This may sound weird to some but this is how it's eaten :) First take the meat and cook it in the soup with a swishing movement. As soon as it is cooked (which should take a few seconds) dip the cooked meat into the egg and eat! This will cool the meat a little and adds great flavor to the meat. At the end of the meal, with your leftover egg sauce, you may choose to add it in to the soup along with your ramen(like we did) or rice.

To end the meal, we were served iced yuzu and a slice of watermelon. It washes off the strong salty soup taste and is super refreshing.

One of the best ways to end a meal

Jiro Shabu is one of our favorite places to eat when we feel the need to spend a little. However this was our first time in the Uptown branch and I personally felt that the food was lacking. I'm unsure of what it was, perhaps the serving sizes were reduced. The pork also tasted a little tough. I was slightly disappointed but maybe I was unlucky and they're usually better. Onward to the next food destination!
