Dude
“Dude,” she said, rolling her eyes in that way that only she could.
“Dude, are you for real?”
He shrugged his shoulders because there is nothing he could say. He knew that he was an idiot. And he knew that her eyeball roll meant that no matter what he said, it wouldn’t make any difference.
So, he grabbed his surfboard and went back out into the ocean - the only place he felt safe and he felt accepted.
Never mind that being out here in the ocean had caused her eye roll to begin with.
He knew that he should be looking for a job.
And that he should stay home and watch the kids more.
But he needed to be out here. In the waves. In the sunshine where there were no expectations.
She used to like his free spirit. That he didn’t care about conventions. Did what he wanted to do.
She used to tell him how much she loved that.
Having a child sure had changed her.
