Contraband
His breathing came in short gasps, his sandals now wearing deep blisters in his feet which had burst and were oozing blood on both feet, but still he ran. Tucked under his arm was the cause for his flight.
Two hours ago he sat reading under a shade tree at the far corner of the park. He thought he was far enough away from anyone as he read sereptiously. He knew he was taking a risk by reading in the daylight, but he couldn't resist opening the book on lunch and taking in a short chapter.
When the policeman walked up towards him and blew the whistle, pointing at him out to his partner, Jake jumped to his feet and began running as fast as his legs could carry him.
His back pain was acute as he reached the foothills. It was cooler here and about to get much colder in a few hours. He'd broken the new law and now was on the list. The policeman had taken his photo from the bench for sure with his academy issued camera/recorder.
Jake limpted to a knoll of trees and sat breathing hard. Only now did he dare put the treasured volume down beside him and bowed his head to the grass in silent prayer.
