An Minimalist Wanabe At The Largest Shopping Mall In The World

The Dubai Mall is the largest shopping mall in the world with a gross floor area of 5.9 million square ft, over 1,200 retail outlets and over 200 food and beverage outlets. In 2014, more than 80 million people visited the mall, making it the world most visited mall as well. The Address, a 5-star luxury hotel is annexed to the mall.

And here I am, a village guy from the island of Borneo, mesmerized by what the mall as to offer. I have also embarked on my minimalist journey and my desire to buy things has been decreasing. Instead of buying new things, at the moment I am more inclined to get rid of or donate things in my house which I no longer need to de-clutter my house. However I have yet to fully embrace the minimalist lifestyle. So as I wander around this mall, I feel akin to:
a) A child with slight allergy to sugar let lose in a candy store;
b) A semi vegetarian at the meat section of the all you can eat buffet;
c) Feel free to post your thoughts in the comments section

My dominant thoughts were this. This mall is trying to seduce the masses to buy things by either preying on their inadequacies or appealing to their quest for happiness that is you will be happy if you buy these things. So I decided to do a little experiment, will I be able to generally have a good time in the mall if I did not buy physical products or if I just make minimum purchase.

The interior of the mall.

World famous brands can be found here offering high end retail products.

A unique window display.

The umbrellas seem to be floating in the air. Notice the Mary Poppins cut out figure in the left.

Entrance of Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo which features a walk-through tunnel.

The Mall also has an Olympic-sized ice rink.

A cascading waterfall with diving figurines add an air of excitement to the mall.

My simple dinner for the night.

The famous Dubai Fountain located just outside the mall provides visitors with entertaining visual and musical experience.

The stunning skyline of Dubai as seen from the mall.

Burj Khalifa, the world's tallest building is located a stone throw away from the Dubai Mall.

Besides the shopping and dining, The Dubai Mall offers entertainment and leisure facilities which includes among others an aquarium and ice skating rink. In addition, it is adjacent to a man made lake with a stunning skyline of Dubai including the Burj Khalifa. Therefore as a wannabe minimalist, I was able to have a great time at the mall without much shopping. The truth be told, I did purchase a small souvenir, my only temptation for that night.
