A Grindy Weekend - Game Development on the Slow Processor Lane.

The seconds tick by...

My brows furrow, eyes locked upon the screen.

The shape for modification exists as an outline.

Its maybe a fifth of the way to its intended destination.

The tab odiously informs me that it is "(Not Responding)".

I hold my breath for just a moment - willing the status to revert...

Source

Wondering if, after ten years, it might be time to replace my hardware.

The message vanishes and I am free. I re-attempt to modify the shape...

I get much closer - but the program again freezes, no longer responding.

Rinse and repeat... a thousand times and more...

A big chunk of my weekend spent building a side-scroller tile-set may be summarized as such.

'deep breaths'

Its my fault.

I know that it is...

And I know whats wrong.

Where 'I' took a wrong turn.

I decided to use hundreds of non-simple brush strokes to bring about the desired texture.

Which works fine for a single tile - but multiplying that about 30 times (plus surface and walling textures), each tile a standard 512 pixels square - and I pretty much scrambled my antique computer's ability to cope with it all.

So - lesson learnt. Next time I'll make textures with optimization firmly in mind.

So... anyway...

I finally made it through a grueling weekend of...

Its a good thing that I broke the original file down into four files. Otherwise I wouldn't have been able to more or less complete my task.

Now I'll gain access to the much more powerful computer at 'the other location', download both the Inkscape svg files as well as the exported png files, both of which my laptop lacked sufficient RAM to cope with the process of combining into a single file.

You lose this round, decade-old laptop. Well-failed.

On the bright side I did take a break to grab some sushi with friends... so there was that. And friends make everything better.

So... that made up my weekend - though I did find some time to get involved in an interesting topic about Revenge and Punishment.

Also - do take a look at my linked previous article as it seems to have been all but overlooked - and its a lot better than this one by my reckoning. /:cP

If you 'didn't' like this then feel free to share your views in comments. A civil conversation can go a long way.

Oh... Why have I not yet invested in a better computer or laptop?

Lets just say that I'm saving up to make a big and yet necessary shift in my life.

I will definitely elaborate on this in future but not just yet. The time is not right. :c)

Sincerely,
