Intro

That's the third post from that series which in total will include 16 publications. If you want to read the previous legend published by me, check those links:

It's the legend, so obviously it's not the story I created, but it may vary a bit from the versions that other people know. I wrote it on my own, with my words, in a way it was said to me when I was a child and how I remembered it.

The legend about Lake Leleskie and the evil governor

In ancient times, the area near Lake Leleskie was ruled by a greedy and cruel governor whose heart was made of stone. Using his power, he announced the laws and taxes that many found difficult to abolish. To clear himself from any responsibility, he blamed this condition on his teacher, Fryderyk Saski, who was the owner of the land. In this way, the governor convinced the people that even if Fryderyk would rule under other governors' cadencies, nothing will change. And so the people suffered, but God's punishment for the wicked governor was yet to come.

The day came when the governor strictly prohibited fishing in the nearby lake Leleskie so that there would be no shortage of fish on his desk. The hungry people began to break this prohibition. The governor was so angry that he punished those who were still fishing in the lake by cutting their heads or hanging them. Since he killed the first peasant, the nets of The governor's were empty and he was unable to fish anymore. He was enraged so much, that he demanded to kill his own servants who were fishing for him, believing that they collaborate with the peasants.

More and more fishermen were coming back with empty hands though, so the governor himself decided to go fishing, but the fish did not want to fall into his nets. Looking for the guilties of that situation, the governor ordered to imprison all women, young and old, virgins, widows, married women, mothers, grandmothers, and daughters. Every one of them was accused to be the witch and cast the spell until the fish return to the lake permanently. Of course, no one could fill the lake of fish, as it was the government who cast the spell by his cruel law, but he didn't know that.

Not seeing any change after imprisoning the women, he decided that the "witches" have to burn at the stake. When most of the women burned in terrible pain and the fish did not appear, the governor decided to stop trying to recover the fish and started hunting wild animals.

Then he was punished for the shameful and cruel deeds that he had committed. One day when he and his team were hunting in the forests near the lake, the great bear came out of his den and attacked the governor. The frightened horse ran towards the lake. Governor, torn by branches, to avoid a painful fall and death from the bear stood firm on the back of his horse. Together they also fell directly into the lake, where there was no help for him.

The next morning, people found the governor's body floating on the surface along with lots of dead fish. Until the end of that year, there were no more fish in the lake. Then, when the king appointed a new governor, kind and with a big heart, the fish once again filled the lake.
