Art Attack #142: Max Caufield the Time Traveling Photographer from Life is Strange! 🦋⏲

Hey Steemit!

We're back again with another Art Attack! If you're new to the series, this is where I share my drawings and the process behind them. A behind-the-scenes look at my artwork, if you will. This is not to say that I'm very good at art, or that I'm a professional in any way. In fact this is the opposite, and serves as a reminder to how I first started, and lets me track my progress too!

If you missed the last couple of posts, I started a new series where I use this template to draw different characters based on suggestions from my viewers on Twitch!

I found this template on Facebook one day, and had the idea to draw different characters for a potential NFT series in the future, but then the whole NFT tanking thing happened. But it was still a cool drawing exercise to do and I wanted to reward my loyal viewers. So instead of drawing characters I already know I thought asking chat would be cool since it would expose me to different characters too!

Anyway, this request was made by one of my viewers who goes by notsochi on Twitch, who wanted me to draw Max Caufield from Life is Strange! I played that game back in 2021 when I first started streaming and I got hooked instantly! It's so unique compared to the other games I've played and I was so engaged with the story immediately! If you're interested, you can check out my blind playthrough on Youtube here!

Here's the trailer:

If you've never played or seen this game before, it's a very story driven game where your decisions matter and will affect the plot and ending of the game. You play as Max Caufield, a high school girl who's very into photography and she realises she has a very unique power that can affect the world around her! It's super cool and I highly recommend playing it if you love a good story. As someone said in the comments, "Life is strange is not a game. IT'S AN EXPERIENCE." And I wholeheartedly agree.

I think it wouldn't be an understatement to say this game changed me, so when notsochi requested this I was so excited to draw Max for myself! Her outfit is actually pretty simple for most of the game, and of course I'd still have to stick to the template but I had an idea for the background.

This was the sketch I did on-stream:

And then I tidied it up off-stream, and gave it a bit more detail. The butterfly is an important aspect to the game so I had to include it!

Then it was to outline! This was pretty simple since I wanted most of it to be coloured without bold outlines so Max would stand out.

image.png

It was pretty easy to colour her as well since she really only has 3 main colours. I tried to make her shirt as accurate as possible and just ended up tracing an actual shirt.

So for the background I wanted to reference a very important photo in the game, which is from Max's dorm room in her high school. She has a beautiful wall in her dorm full of pictures and I always loved that wall. It's a very iconic photo in the game as well so of course I had to reference it! The only trouble was of course drawing that many polaroids on the wall.

I sketched out what it would roughly look like and I also drew her bed and tried to be as accurate as I could.

Of course replicating the actual photos would be impossible since I could barely tell from the reference pics so I just ended up drawing my own doodles for the photos. Anyway they had just to be simple things since it was in the background.

I just used different brushes that I had and drew random stuff so that it would give the illusion of variety in the polaroids when I duplicated them.

image.png

I also drew the lanterns draping over them so the photos wouldn't look too obviously copied. And of course I wanted it to have that warm vibe of the original photo.

After I changed the background colour, it was perfect! Or I thought it looked perfect at least. The background might look a little simple but I think it matched the style of the template pretty well while still giving some depth. And I think I captured Max quite accurately too. Anyone who has played Life is Strange will recognise this immediately.

Overall, this was definitely one of my favourite requests to do! Just because I really loved the game and the character, and at least it's someone I'm finally familiar with. It's still someone I've never drawn before so it was still good practice.

Here's the timelapse:

I'm currently playing through Life is Strange: True Colors - the latest in the series on my Twitch!! If you're a fan of the series, come by on Thursdays, 1am GMT+8! We're 2 chapters in and I'm absolutely loving it so far!

Thanks so much for reading!
