In the North Eatersten corner of Argentina you will find the national park Esteros del Iberá. It is the second largest wetland in the world. The only one that is larger is Pantanal i Brazil. These vast wetlands seems so untouched, but has an abundance of rich wildlife, nature and birds. It is also of great importance as a reservoir of fresh water. The absolute best activity was a three hour boat trip in the afternoon. This is a great way to get close to wildlife. We really felt how vast this place is. Because there were only a few tourists, it reinforced our feeling om untouchability The wildlife was the reason to take time to visit. Besides all the birds there are caymans, deer and the capybara.
We stayed 3 nights in order to have time enough to walk most of the trails along the lagoon, and do a boat trip. This area must be a birdparadise. There are lots of different species. On our boattrip, the guide told us there are more than 320 different species. Even we didn't see that many, I did see a lot of different species. Because of only a few tourist, we really got that feeling of the place being untouched.
The caimans did catch our attention when we walked the trails or got close to the edge of the water. They did get out of the water and seems to rest besides some of the boats. But we were told they eat fish and not dangerous for humans. The are not so big. I think the biggest might have been one and half meters. They look like crocodiles, without me being able to tell the difference.
This animal was totally unknown to us. But from the guide we learned it's a capybara. A kind of giant cavy rodent that has some similarities with guinea pigs, even though the size is gigantic. The adults look like they were a meter in lenght and maybe 60 -70 cm. in hight. When walked the trails we saw many of these in groups. They are not an endangered species.
An absolut wellspend afternoon in this lesser known national park in Argentina. The boat trip was an absolute highlight.
