What is Plagiarism

Plagiarism is the representation of another author's language, thoughts, ideas, or expressions as one's own original work. In educational contexts, there are differing definitions of plagiarism depending on the institution. Prominent scholars of plagiarism include Rebecca Moore Howard,Susan Blum, Tracey Bretag, and Sarah Elaine Eaton, among others. Source

According to the Merriam-Webster online dictionary, to "plagiarize" means:

  • to steal and pass off (the ideas or words of another) as one's own
  • to use (another's production) without crediting the source
  • to commit literary theft
  • to present as new and original an idea or product derived from an existing source. Source

In my words, plagiarism means making the other person's work as one's own work without giving him credit.

Types of Plagiarism

Considering the pattern, plagiarism can be of different types. They are:

  • Direct Plagiarism
  • Mosaic Plagiarism
  • Accidental plagiarism
  • Self-plagiarism
  • Paraphrasing plagiarism

Self-plagiarism and mosaic plagiarism are the two most common forms of plagiarism. Source

What is Self-Plagiarism?

If someone reuses his own work again without the permission of the professor, it will be considered self-plagiarism. Source

What is Mosaic Plagiarism?

Mosaic Plagiarism occurs when a student borrows phrases from a source without using quotation marks, or finds synonyms for the author's language while keeping to the same general structure and meaning of the original. Source

To avoid plagiarism, you need to ensure that everything you write is in your own words. If you’re using someone else’s ideas, or quoting them for example, you need to ensure that you’ve properly cited and referenced the original author. Source
