New Delhi has been the capital of India since 1912. But the very place where the city is located has been inhabited several thousand years prior. Old Delhi which is also called Shahjahananbad was founded by Shah Jahan (he also built the Taj Mahal). But for many hundreds of years, the area around the city has been part of several different kingdoms and empires. One took over after the other and the city got different names after who ruled there.

When I visited New Delhi a few years ago, I spent a few days getting around to several of the most important historical sites in Delhi's history. One of the places I visited was Qutb Minar.

The impressive building complex can be dated back to the time when the city was under Islamist rule. Here are lots of fine examples of early Afghan architecture.

Outb Minar is a tower of victory that was erected in 1193 just after the last Hindu kingdom in Delhi was defeated. This famous tower of almost 73 m in height, was founded by Qutbuddin Aibak in the Mameluk dynasty at the end of the 12th century. The building was demolished after the 1st floor was completed. This is because he died. But it was completed by his successor and in the same style as it had been started.

This is not only historically interesting, but also a pleasure to study the exquisite carvings.
