Last month I was back in Budapest and planned to visit one of the others. Since I was here with sister and brother in law (who both knows Budapest very well) They had allready desided to go for lunch at the pub located only a few minutes walk from our lodging. Unfortunatly it was closed due to the temperature, 35 degrees Celcius. Since it is an outdoor pub, it made sence to close during the day. Unfortunatly we couldn’t og back due to plans later on.
Instead I will show you some photos from the famous Szimpla Kert, to give you an idea of what a ruin pub is. To give an explanation of what a ruinpub is, the simplest way is to say it’s a pubestablished in an abandoned, ruined building. Before my visit in 2019, I didn't know about these pubs. But because I also travelled together with sister and brother in law they knew about them. My brother in law explained the story behind this phenomenon.
These bars are often established in backyards and buildings that have been abandoned for years. The buildings have been left to decay after WWII. Many people left this part of Budapest after the Holocoast and when noone took care, they became subject to decay. Around the years of 2002 some people invented the concept of establishing pubs in these building.
As you can see on the photos, there are no new and trendy interior in these pubs. It looks as everything have been found on a flee market. Certainly a very special atmophere in these pubs.
