#TRAVEL My Weekly Powerup | #club100 | Ruins that bear witness to a bygone era | #steemexclusive / 6 photos

These photos shows what is part of a quite a big building that was once a sugar mill. The ruins that are still here, are located on the east coast of Mauritius. What you see on the photos, is part of the main building. Because only the outer walls are still here, it’s not so easy to imagine what it once looked like. These sugar mills usually had only one chimney, but this one has two. I don't know if it's the only one with two on the island, but it's the only one I have so far.

This former factory was built in 1822. We found this date above the main entrance. By talking to a local who looked after the place, we were told that it closed down in 1875. Many sugar mills like this one, were build during the time when Mauritius was under British colonial rule. The architectural style is therefore influenced by the British. Mauritius is a volcanic island, so the stones used seems to be the basaltic rocks found all over the island. I have visitid a few orther ruined sugar mills, but this one is one of the best preserved.
