Mendoza in Argentina is synonymous with wine. It is Argentina's largest and most famous wine region. This region produces almost 70% of the countryโ€™s total wine amount, The city of Mendoza is big. Right on the outskirts you will find all the vineyards. We chose to live in Maipu, a few kilometers south of Mendoza city itself. Apart from wine, the area also has other attractions. Like the Andes mountains that can be seen in the background. If you take the road to Chile, across the Andes, you will pass the highest mountain in the Americas โ€“ Aconcaqua with a height of 6961 meters above sea level.

The plan was to live in the middle of the vineyards in Maipu. We either walked or bycycled among the vineyards. Mendoza city was easily be visited on a day trip. That makes a great break from wine tasting. An excurtion up into the Andes is also a nice break and easily arranged from Mendoza. I already went to Aconcaqua in 2019. This time we focused more on visiting some of the vineyards.

How Mendoza has become Argentina's largest and best-known wine region is linked to several aspects that contribute to making the district well suited for viticulture. The first to bring the plants to Argentina were the Spanish Jesuit monks, who brought the plants with them. Later when European immigrants arrived in the 19th century, they helped to improve production methods. They also brought more varieties of plants with them. Many of the vineyards have been established by French or Italian winemaker. The Malbec grape is the most famous and is considered Argentina's national grape / wine, even though it originally came from France.

The photos above was taken on an early morning walk before breakfast. We were hoping to get at last look at Aconcaqua. As time has passed, Argentine wine has become known and has got a position on the international world map of wine.
