The island has a mixture of cultures. Today's population are descendants of people who originally came from Europe, India, Africa, China etc. No matter where you are, you will feel this blend of culture and traditions. The food culture is also something in itself. Food from all corners of the world makes meals an experience. Of course, I have my favourites, which are the first things I check out after arriving.
The first people to discover the island, was the Arabs. After them, the Portoguese came along. In 1598 the Dutch arrived. Then the French and up untill dependency in 1967 the British had the power. During the colonial era, the sugar plantations were the main income of the island. There are not any large scale production today, but you will still see the sugar cane fields all over the island. Two days more and I will be off to Mauritius.
