We Love Our Silkie (FLUFFY) Chickens 🐓 - Cute Explanation by 10 Year Old Girl 👱🏻

A common question on our farm by visitors is "Is that a chicken?"! Yes!

It's so FLUFFY!

We have been raising Silkie chickens for about 5 years now. It is, by far, my wife's favorite breed. They are more like pets than barnyard animals. They are quite the attraction for visitors and they don't mind being held and petted.

The Silkies are so fluffy because their feathers are different than other chickens. A "normal" feather has these little hooks on them, called barbicels, that hold them together (keeping the tight shape and pattern of a feather). The Silkie feather does not have the barbicels so they look and feel more like fur.

The Top Hat, Fluffy Hat or as my friend likes to say "hair from the 80's" is another unique feature of the Silkies. Some people believe they are so docile because they CAN'T SEE! LOL The bigger the fluffy hair, the more desirable they are by chicken keepers. At least, that's how my wife sees it.

Here's a photo taken yesterday of a Silkie Rooster and Hen that we will be selling on the local market. We have them listed for $40, but I'd take $35 SBD 😏

The video below was a cute moment where my (then) 10 year old daughter shows off the Silkies and Show Girls. She explains a little about these cute chicks. My favorite line is "A male Silkie has given her the ability to give these chicks"!

I just love that girl 😍
