I have an abundance of Elecampane seeds which I acquired last year from two friends who were growing it. Way more than I need to get a some plants started for myself this year.
I have been using tea and tincture of the Elecampane root as an expectorant and anti viral for my lungs. Elecampane root has tons of beneficial qualities but it is best known for its qualities of healing the lungs.
Some ailments that Elecampane may help alleviate:
- Coughs
- Bronchitis
- Chest Affections
- Asthma

Harvesting Elecampane Roots
Harvesting the roots is easy. It's best to wait 2-3 years for the roots to develop. Dig under the plant in the fall and pull them out, remove them from the plant leaving the crown intact. Then re-plant the crown because the plant will grow new roots from it the following year!
Elecampane Flowers
The flowers is another great reason to grow Elecampane. They are very tall, large and vibrant. They look like sunflowers which is no surprise because they are both in the Asteraceae family.
