The Need to Let Go

It might be an unpleasant experience, a grudge or a painful feeling connected to the past, we sometimes hold on and get stuck with these unhealthy and toxic feelings which we find to be quite hard to let go of. Holding on to these unpleasant and hurtful memories does less (or maybe nothing) in helping us grow or reach our full potentials, in fact, it holds us back from reaching those potentials and enjoying life as we are supposed to.

Ever seen a toddler playing with a toy and then is suddenly not interested in playing with that toy anymore but still holds on to it? Well, what we get after the whole process of gripping the toy is a deformed and ruined toy. And it keeps that child from playing with toys that he might have enjoyed playing with.

I think it also is so with us whenever we try holding onto something. Holding onto these circumstances, situations and feelings might be strangely fulfilling, but it truly has no benefit at all, it will only hinder us from living life fully.

Holding on to pain continuously will only bring damage to us. No one wants to have a damaged or ruined life (that's probably why we tend to hold onto it but it ends up doing more harm that good). There might be some sort of certainty that comes with holding on to things in which we need to let go of (because we are familiar with it, even if it is painful) but by holding onto the past, we let go of the present and miss out on the beauty of life.

There is no way we can fully concentrate on the present and get the most out of it while holding onto the past, the past will always steal the joy and excitement out of the present when we hold onto it. I really can't think of anything positive that can come out of holding onto the past on the long run (except if it is a happy memory), but we always find ourselves doing that.

We can't change that past by holding onto it for too long, we can only do further damage to ourselves. Letting go might seem really hard, but it really isn't, you just need to take the first step towards it (which is to learn to forgive yourself), only then can you grow and be more productive. Let go of that past, let yourself heal and allow yourself see the beauty of the present!
