With origins from ancient India, karma is a key concept in Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and many other religions.
Some consider karma and rebirth linked and simultaneously essential, some consider karma but not rebirth essential, and a few discuss and conclude karma and rebirth to be flawed fiction.
Thus karma has not one, but multiple definitions and different meanings.
Karma means action, work or deeds and more broadly names the universal principle of cause and effect, action and reaction, which some believe governs all consciousness.
Where intent and actions of an individual (cause) influence the future of that individual (effect). Good intent and good deed contribute to good karma and future happiness, while bad intent and bad deed contribute to bad karma and future suffering.
Karma is the Sanskrit word for action. Karma means action. It is equivalent to Newton’s law of ‘every action must have a reaction’. When we think, speak or act we initiate a force that will react accordingly. This returning force maybe modified, changed or suspended, but most people will not be able eradicate it.
The best explanation for karma I've ever heard was that karma is like a "box". When you do something good, you put it in the box. When you do something bad, you put it in the box. Periodically, you'll reach into the box and pull something out. If you do more good things, you increase your chances of getting something good out of the box. If you do bad things frequently, you're more likely to get something less than ideal out of the box. Make sense?
The law of karma is also known as Karmayoga. Karmayoga literally means “discipline of action.” Nothing is accomplished without action. There must be a discipline of action. Every karma will bring its fruit but we should never get attached to the outcome. Detachment with the outcome is the foundation of karmayoga.
When you are focused on the fruit or the outcome then you are focused on the future and you miss the present moment. When you miss the present moment you miss the life, because life is happening in the present moment.
This is called awareness. In Hindi it is called "Hosh". One should perform every action with awareness then that action itself become meditation and it will liberate you. That state of liberation is called "Moksha" or "Nirvana".
If you don't believe in it, no one can make you understand it.
As a man himself sows, so he himself reaps; no man inherits the good or evil act of another man. The fruit is of the same quality as the action.
— Mahabharata.
This law says that nobody can escape the consequences of his actions. If you can not escape from the law of karma then why not use it in your favor? why not sow the seeds of love and compassion?
The law sates that whenever there is something wrong in your life, there is something wrong in you. The world around you is just a mirror. Outer circumstances just mirror your inner states. So always remember that you are responsible for whatever happening to you this moment.
The Law teach you to never complain about your situations. It teach you to take responsibility in your hand. Nobody is responsible for your suffering or happiness except you.
You might not always be able to pinpoint the exact reason behind anything you're facing now. The effect of karma need not to be immediate; the effect of karma can be later at any time in one's life, whether be good or bad but one gets what one has done in same or different way.
"Do good to others and good will come to you(maybe through the same people or others, you’ll never know) and same goes with bad".
It could be like you are A, you helped B, B helped C and ultimately C helps you i.e A.
"What goes around can come around faster than you think"
It may be possible that several small deeds generate a single larger effect. Like you might be rewarded really well for doing small good deeds everyday. Same goes for bad deeds. Say for example if a dishonest shopkeeper deliberately sells under quality goods to his customers and cheats them on a daily basis, he might one day get robbed of all his wealth by burglars in a single blow.
Happiness comes due to good actions, suffering results from evil actions,
by actions, all things are obtained, by inaction, nothing whatsoever is enjoyed.
If one's action bore no fruit, then everything would be of no avail,
if the world worked from fate alone, it would be neutralized.
— Mahabharata.
