The Moon Festival Gala.

Greetings fellow Steemians, today I'm sharing my second post about the moon festival, you can find the first part about foods eaten at Mid-Autumn festival HERE.

Aside from eating Moon cakes, Crabs and watching the moon, Chinese people also watch the Autumn Festival Gala broadcasted by the CCTV (China Central Television) for the entire country to see. It's format is the same as the Chinese New Year Gala, both celebrating their respective festivals with many acts and performances from celebrities.

This year, I was honoured to be one of 5000 guests invited to the live gala ceremony. Lets take a peak inside to see what this Mid-Autumn Festival is all about!

Today, I wore a blue and white porcelain Qipao to this grand event, I didn't think that i'd run into lamp posts with the same colour scheme.. Whoops!

White and Blue Porcelain is China's main porcelain because of its intricate blue intertwining patterning. For this reason, the pattern is used frequently on clothes. The picture above is from my introduction to Kunqu Opera.

Tickets to the Mid-Autumn Festival Gala

Arrangement of Seats at the Gala

The event was hosted at Xi'an's Tang Paradise, it's the first Tang imperial style garden built in China. The stage was set opposite the largest Tang imitation building called the 'Amethyst Building'.

Behind me are red cushions on the steps of the Amethyst building, each correspond to a seat for a guest.

Because this Gala event is to be broadcasted live to the whole of China, in the background, you can see many CCTV vehicles each carrying the equipment necessary for broadcasting live TV. The security personnel are responsible for keeping the order within the event area making sure the schedule is un-interrupted. At the entry gates are event personnel responsible for checking tickets and helping guests, they're all dressed in Tang style clothing adding to the traditional atmosphere.

The equipment I saw at the live broadcast

Stage Design

The lighting effects are really important in the gala. With every act, the lights will have a different setting which give a different desired effect. At the very back, there is a large LED screen which is used to show custom background scenery in 3D. Because this is the Mid Autumn Festival Gala, every backdrop has a Moon theme to it as well as traditional Chinese buildings.

Video Cameras

There are at least 5 fixed position camera's around the stage, and 3 camera's mounted on a very large camera crane which swivels around to get shots from different angles.

A mixer for producing the the live feed

For broadcasting to live TV remotely, the cars carry live production equipment that allow it to get the video feed from any of the cameras on site. Switching to different angles, and closeups are as easy as pushing a button.

Walking to the Live Gala

Outside the entrance there was an army of fans holding up signs of support for their favourite celebrities.

But sadly, i'm alone in holding up Steemit signs (for now).

When you enter, you must first cross a bridge decorated with lanterns in the traditional Chinese Red Colour.

After crossing the bridge there is a magnificent waterfall.

The scenery on the foot path to the show was stunning. The full moon was in clear view.

Behind me are the distinguished guests from America, Canada, Australia and other countries. These group of guests are overseas Chinese and many have been away from China for many many years. The Mid-Autumn festival is about the gathering of family, so they were very happy to be invited to China to reunite with their family.

The gala organisers gave each guest a goodie bag containing some Mooncakes as well as the set list of acts.

Tonights full moon is huge!

The stage was set up on a man made lake on the edge of the square. This is the first time CCTV have produced a Mid Autumn Festival Gala on water.

The entire gala consists of 26 individual acts including singing and dancing, Chinese Opera, Instrumental Music, Acrobatics, Symphonies, Rock n Roll, folk art and many others. Through some special effects and good stage props, they were able to make it seem like we travelled through time to ancient times and then back again.

Every act related to the Moon had strong Chinese Themes.

The organisers of the Gala were also able to invite the Coach of the recent gold medal winning Volleyball Team. At the interlude, huge volleyballs were deployed around the seating area for fun.
