OST of the Day #4: Child of Light - Aurora's Theme

Hey Steemians!

If you're unfamiliar with this new series of mine, basically I share a soundtrack and my thoughts about it, and I highly recommend listening to the song while reading! 😊

Today I chose a song from the beautiful game, Child of Light!

Have a listen to this masterpiece:

Child of Light is a 2D side-scroller/platformer RPG developed by Ubisoft Montreal and published by Ubisoft in April 2014. It was released on many different platforms; PC, PS3, PS4, Wii U, Xbox 360 and Xbox One. The game follows a young girl, Aurora, as she travels through the fantasy world of Lemuria.

Here's a trailer that Ubisoft released:

The game features a unique, watercolor-esque world created in Ubisoft's UbiArt Framework engine, and includes a variety of platforming elements and puzzles. Battles with enemies use a system similar to the active-time battle system found in the Final Fantasy series. As in a normal RPG, you can level up your characters and build individual skill trees.

Child of Light is truly amazing, and remains one of the best RPGs I've ever played to this day. I love every aspect of this game; the coming-of-age fairy tale story, the rhyming dialogue the whole way through the game, the breathtaking watercolour graphics, the different RPG format, and the MUSIC. 😍

The time-based battle system was quite different for me, because I've never played RPGs like that before, so that added element was really interesting! I like that it made players strategise their moves in-battle since they have to consider the delays of their attacks, rather than just spamming the same moves every battle with standard turn order in other RPGs.

Curiously, the developers behind Child of Light, director Patrick Plourde and writer Jeffrey Yohalem, were also the ones who made Far Cry 3, which is as opposite as you can get compared to Child of Light. I was really surprised when I found out, and really shows some people at Ubisoft still know how to make games right.

Alright, the MUSIC. I love this particular piece so much. When I listened to Aurora's Theme after beating the game, I teared up a little, not only because of the story but also because of how beautiful it sounds! The cello might be a little strong, but the accompanying piano and the subtle instruments in the background like the cymbals and timpani/bass drum really pull the whole piece together.

I like how the song really represents Aurora's journey through the game. In the beginning, she feels lost and alone, and after she finds some friends she gains her bearings and explores this mysterious world she's found herself in. In the bridge of the song it gets quiet as she feels lost again, and the piano comes out more as the melody, along with the xylophone. Towards the end, she gets stronger and more determined to go back home to her father, which is conveyed in the increased support from the percussion section.

Here's a behind-the-scenes look at making the music and sounds in Child of Light:
