Jungle Shots: Common Acapulco Nature Sights

The photos in this post are for the most part pretty common sights here in the city. I took these shots during a barrio walk, where I looked like a tourist for a short time in the place I've called home now for two years. While these sights are common to me and others who live here, I realize that most people don't see things like this every day. Take the photo above this for example. I don't know what kind of flower that is but birds love it and it grows on a tree.

The fruits you see are passionfruit. I never have the luck of having my camera when I see the flowers open, so I settled for taking pictures of what is seeming to be a nice harvest shaping up.

Mangoes have been a bit of a nightmare for me lately putting it simply. I didn't know it until I'd been itchy for weeks from an unexplained body wide rash but mangoes are in the same plant family as things like poison ivy and poison oak. Turns out they've got the same chemical in the peels of the fruit and the sap of the tree that poison ivy does that causes humans, like me, so much grief. I've been feeding my birds mangoes for several weeks as they're free with mango season. Now that I have identified them for what they are, I take care to shower after taking care of my birds which seems to be doing the trick.

Truth be told the greener the mango the more itchy you will be. Be warned friends.

Common sight, pile of building material held in place with bricks and sticks. Without those it'd just wash down the street in a rain event. These setups stay put even when the road is a river, they've surprised me.

Remnants of a property that never got finished being developed. It seems to be common up here, buy the land start building and get stalled out for a few months to several years depending on the place. This property has looked like this since we moved in.

Termites, one of the largest nests I've seen. Ants, termites, wasps, scorpians all of that are seriously no joke here. I miss winter and it's pesticide capabilities.

Street dogs are everywhere. Some hate that fact, partially because they get chased by them, but I love the fact that dogs are everywhere. And when they chase me I chase them back, works every time. I'm also known for breaking up bad dog fights by running up and screaming at them, it works surprisingly well. If you're someone who's afraid of dogs or gets chased by them, try chasing them back. I've been nearly attacked by packs of ten or more dogs and it always ends in me chasing them to make them scatter.

I'll forever think of @stevenlytle when I see these beans as I've seen him use them for various DIY tasks.

Likely half of the trees here are legumous meaning that they are nitrogen fixers and they flower and produce beans of all different types. Some are edible, some medicinal, some toxic.

I didn't know this until I moved here but those climbing sprawling trees are in the ficus family.

More bean trees. They have the prettiest flowers.

Neighborhood chicken I considered catching and bringing home.
