One photo every day: Intriguing focus stacking HDR mishap (149/365)

How not to do focus stacking...

Because I'm still ill and can't spend time photographing outside, I decided I need to practice some photography tricks. One I had never tried before is focus stacking.

I'm very likely doing something wrong from the start, because I don't have a focusing rail for my camera (I wonder if it matters), I'm just thinking, of course the software can handle all that focus breathing and whatnot.

Then I shot three photos with differing focus points. (Yeah I probably should have that rail and shoot in 5 mm intervals.)

Oh, and lastly, I didn't find a focus stack stitching command on Darktable (I wonder if I should use other software for that), and clicked "create HDR".

fail
Utter fail. But interesting effect anyhow. :)

Camera body: Canon EOS 550D
Lens: Super Carenar MC ƒ=135mm 1:2.8
Aperture: ƒ/11
Exposure: 30 s
ISO: Dual-ISO 100+200

It appears I must keep practicing still.
