LOS TRES PONCHOS is a one-man stand-up comedy about 1 family and 3 generations of Latino men: a grandfather who abandons his past to find a new life in America, a father who works hard so his son can play pretend, and a young man who wants to be a comic.
We’ll be sharing video of the project soon, stay tuned!
I’m extremely honored to be trusted with guiding this story, written by my good buddy Ponch. At this time last year he said, “I really want to do a solo show, but I’m not sure where to start.” and now, here we are. In the last year we got him connected with the Intiman Emerging Artist Program, a free professional and artistic development bootcamp providing over 160 hours of training to a diverse cohort of artists in Seattle, WA. (No biggie, but he was one of 12 out of over 150! I like to brag on him, because he won’t do it for himself).
After performing an excerpt of material for the Intiman Industry Showcase, LOS TRES PONCHOS was picked up for a 4-performance run, Mar 1-4, 2018, at 18th & Union: an arts space in Seattle, WA. Below, see Los Tres Ponchos in the flesh!
LOS TRES PONCHOS is a hybrid of improvisation, stand-up comedy, and scripted text in a style similar to John Leguizamo, who uses an amalgamation of these theatrical forms to create personal material that is humorous and relevant to the world in which we live.
So...why is this show important right now?
Our country is at a breaking point--starkly divided on many topics. While it would be nice to live life free from politics, our lived experiences as intersectional artists give us a platform to engage communities in a meaningful dialogue about socially relevant issues: like race, masculinity, immigration, and socioeconomics.
In LOS TRES PONCHOS we meet Pa Poncho (Grandpa), Poncho (Dad), and Ponch (himself). These characters manifest onstage as stand up comics working material about their family with the audience. As we meet each Poncho, we learn more about the experiences that shaped this family’s life in America.
Just because you’ll laugh doesn’t mean it’s funny. Y por favor, no seas el gusano.
Hi folks! I’m pretty new here and loving steemit so far. I’ll be using the site to share my current projects, thoughts on arts politics, artist resources (from reading lists to development strategy), and FUN things like hiking. Check out this beach trek or this bold art you can use today in your posts! See you around. @lilyraabe
