This was the second pot of curry I had for lunch last Saturday.
Going to Johor Bahru
Instead of the normal taiji (taichi) practice on Saturday, our taiji buddies took a break and went on a day trip to Johor Bahru in Malaysia. The original plan was for all to meet in Jurong East, Singapore and take a bus there. The day before setting off, the meeting points splitted into 2 because people were from different parts of the island and because the price of additional half to one hour of sleep is priceless. An alternate meeting point Newton was suggested and I deided to join the Newton meeting point at 0715h after searching online for:- best way to go jb sentral from newton.
So, a group of us went to the Newton train station and walked towards the carpark Newton Food Center. There was a queue already there and though were expecting frequency of 20 minutes per trip, we waited almost an hour for the ugly yellow bus. Mid-way while waiting, it started to drizzle. The bus came and there were only standing room. It was either that or the possibility of getting rained on while continuing to wait for the bus. So, we paid cash and hop on. The ride was initially quite smooth but we ran into major traffic jam nearer to Woodlands Checkpoint. Closer to the building, we got have and walked about 100 meters to the building.
There were many people that day. The queues were long and processing was slow. After clearing the Singapore custom, hope on the bus again and ride to the JB Sentral Checkpoint. Another longer ride than expected because of the heavy traffic. A bit interesting to see people walking on the causeway from Singapore to Malaysia. Near the Malaysian checkpoint, alighted and another walk to the Malaysia customs and long queues and slow processing again.
By then, the two groups were together and walked towards City Square from the Malaysian customs building. You just need to follow the sign to City Square - that's where most people are heading to and chances are if you follow the crowd, you will be alright.
From City Square, look for a sign that tells you to exit to Jalan Wong Ah Fook. Our first objective is Kam Long Curry Fish Head. We walked along Jalan Wong Ah Fook until we reach a shop where there were already people queueing. It was about 1115h and there were about 5 or 6 groups in front of us. While in the queue, our orders were taken and continue to wait. All the seats were already occupied and each group had to wait for a table to be cleared for their turn.
Finally, we were assigned a table and got some drinks while we wait again.
We had 3 pots of fish tail and 3 pots of fish head and rice for 13 of us. Including drinks, the total cost was $312 (Malaysia Ringgit). By the time food was ready, it was more then 4 hours from the time we started at Newton train station.
I'm no fan of fish head. I prefer fish the way the western style, fillet and not the fish with the head staring back. You do get some decent meat from the fish head and I heard good collagen too.
Everyone agree the food 🐟 was good.👍
Was it worth the 4 hour journey? Yes.
Was it worth coming every week for this? No.
Still, I agree it's one of the best curry fish head I have taken. It's spicy but not the kind of spicy that numbs your taste bud.
Next Stop: KSL City
After a wholesome lunch, we walked back towards the Malaysia customs building to the bus-stop and catch a bus to KSL City which is another realty development with condominium and shopping center.
One of taiji buddies has a home there and we went there to check it out and take a toilet break too at the 7th floor. An opportunity to see the gym and check out the pool.
After a while, headed up higher to 35th floor for a more breathetaking view.
Time for snack. Just head downstairs to the shopping center. Ended up in Black Ball having a coconut chendol. The dessert looked good but was more disappointing than expected. The bits of the green stuff (called chendol) seem to had been frozen before and not totally defrosted.
Back to City Square
After some window shopping, we decided the better choice to shop was back at City Square. Took a bus back to City Square. The 1st floor had a huge Halloween decoration. Coffee break at a shop called Nonya Leaf. The tables were all occupied and had to wait but we get to our coffee and some snacks in good time. Not bad but prefer the coffee to be hotter.
Then the group broke up for whatever shopping. Look at how my wife decided the reward for this trip should be.
1. Kueh lapis
A Malay or Indonesian cake which is made in a very elaborate process. A layer is baked then another layer is added and then baked. Continuously adding layer and baking until the require number of layers.
2. Small Japanese Cheese Cake
A bit expensive even though these kind of cake are generally more expensive than others.
Will save a bit details of this cake for the next post.
Time to go home. Walked from City Square across a bridge to the Malaysian customs. The queue was long but still better than when we came in the morning. Cleared the process and took a Singapore bus service numbered 170 back. Convenient because the fare could be paid using a stored value card. On the bus out on the causeway, the traffic heavy but flowing better than in the morning. Still saw people walking across the causeway in both directions and there were motorcycles in the middle of the causeway waiting and picking up people who walked out after the Singapore customs. Wonder how the riders got there. Cleared Malaysisan customs and went into Singapore clearing Singapore customs then immediately U-turn and clear Singapore customs to get out of Singapore immediately or some other way?
Lesson from the trip
- Toilet break before every bus ride - you never long how the traffic will be
- Have sufficient cash in loose change for the bus-rides
- Watch how fast the customs queue are processed - not the shortest queue is the quickest
- Avoid going on holiday weekends or the weekend before a holiday weekend.
