My last entry from my trip to the region of Canyon Itaimbezinho but this time from inside. The first time i went during winter time and just hiked on top of the canyon. Half year later i decided to visit the place again to do the famous trail "Trilha do Rio do Boi", which follows the river inside the canyon. The river got its name because many cows which browse on top of the canyon fell down and went with the river ... so now it is the "Ox River". I arrived in the city Praia Grande in Santa Catarina from where the adventure starts but unfortunately the weather changed and it started to rain and it didn't stopped. In the summer time the rain is a big problem... I checked the weather forecast for the next days: Rain, Rain, Rain.... So i left and came back 1 month later and was more lucky with the weather!
The hike inside the canyon takes about 8-9 hours and you have to cross many times the river! So it is definitely a summer adventure! You should be in good shape and you need a guide.
There are many waterfalls to take a refreshing bath and take a moment to breath and enjoy the nature.
I recommend to do the hikes on top of canyon as well as inside. It is a great feeling walking between this huge stone walls. Don't miss it!
In Praia Grande i stayed at the Hotel "Refúgio Ecológico Pedra Afiada" which is inside the canyon Malacara. From there you can do lot of hiking and explore the nature.
The view form the hotel. You are already inside a canyon!
In summer you have to be lucky with the weather... The clouds drift from the sea into the interior of the country and get stock at the huge rocky walls. The canyon disappears completely in the fog.
You can find many Azure jays around the hotel.
On my way back home i passed at the city Canela and visited the Parque do Caracol, where you find this huge waterfall. It is a nice and calm park and offers some view points.
The Parque do Caracol (Horseshoe Park) is a nice place to relax, take a bath in the river and observe some animals.
