How to take high key photos using natural light

I dared to do this experiment, something radical, here I tell you how to...

How about friends of steemit, today as always I share a little bit of my experiences in photography, contributing a little bit of content to the whole community and well, as the title says, today I will show you how to capture these photos in high key, using only natural light, white cloth and a little help from the integrated flash of the camera.

I took these photos for some friends, who are studying fashion design, who asked me for these photos for a class project. I initially refused, since I don't have a photographic studio, much less lights to take photos in a high key, but from so much insistence I don't stay of another, other than to put the head to work and see how we could take the photos.

Before continuing, let us clarify that it is "high key". They are photos that are used a lot in the photography of products or fashion, because they manage to capture in a pleasant way the details of the objects or people to be portrayed and are characterized by having a histogram, in which the colors usually go from the medium tones to the high lights because the shadows are almost null, resulting in images with very soft contrasts.

The high key is very much associated with the images in white background, although it is true that this background is the most used to use this technique, it is not the only one, even a photo in exteriors with many colors, in which these colors to cover the area of half tones, even the high lights with very few shadows, can be considered as a high key.

As long as the photo is not burned by light, in that case it would only be a photographer's mistake.

The place we used as a "studio". It was the area of the swimming pool, which is in the residence, of one of my friends, besides the photos were taken at about 10 in the morning (imagine how strong the sun was), that was a total madness, but in the end the results, although they were not the best, managed to pass the test.

So how did I manage to make it to the finals?

I took some time to observe the area and the position of the sun, it was then when I looked at one of the walls near the pool, which had shade because the sun didn't shine directly, but still, it looked clear enough to work, is where I decided to place the white fabric (which was also not the most appropriate because it was bright and did not give me a very uniform color).

Once I did this, I could already start measuring the light with my camera, so I asked the model to please stand in front of the canvas, to make some tests, immediately notice that a shadow formed on the fabric, because she was very close to the wall, I asked her to move away a little, with that not only managed to eliminate the shadow, but also, since we were working with the sun behind our backs.

With the sunlight illuminating it in this way, you can give more volume and definition to your body, thus creating a greater contrast, in which you can detail more clearly the contour of it in the background.

Although this represented an advantage, in turn the sunlight almost at the zenith and with his back to it, produced very strong shadows on his face and most of his body, that is why I decided to use the integrated flash of the camera, which managed to fill the shadows created by the sun.

Of all the light tests I did that day, this was the one I liked the most, the rest of the work was editing and it is here where I emphasize again, the importance of shooting in "RAW". Because thanks to this format I was able to recover a lot of information from the shadows and high lights, improving the result much more.

I'm sure that if I had done this experiment in an hour, where the light was softer the result would have been much better, but because of time, things turned out that way.

What do you think? You dare to try? Let me know in the comments, I hope this information is useful for your projects and that you encourage yourself to go out, do not let the fact, if you do not have the best teams discourage you, creativity does not come only from the fact, imagine the best planes or angles, if not also from creating solutions, to achieve the images we want, when we do not have the resources.

So good that's all for now guys and just like I always ask you to give me your vote, comment and share this information with your friends.
