I came across a cool Wordpress plugin today: I have a few websites that I set up years ago in Wordpress. To some of my old sites, I have not made any changes in years, but hosting Wordpress sites comes with some responsibilities - exploits in themes, plugins and Wordpress itself can make the site an easy target for hackers if it they are not updated regularly.

The WP Static Site Generator does not only make it possible to generate static HTML pages out of Wordpress websites, it can also upload them directly to Github where Github Pages offers free hosting. The speed increase of loading static pages compared to cached versions of the Wordpress site from my server is huge.

While the plugin manages almost everything automatically, some settings need to be adjusted manually - I had to add some files such as the favicon and the 404 page that the plugin did not find automatically. Also, any PHP-based features such as contact forms need to be replaced by JS alternatives.
