Getting Some Good Sushi in Malta

I really enjoy food... and I really love sushi.

Until about 15 years ago, sushi options were mostly unheard of in the Maltese Islands. I've also been reliably informed (and I'd have to agree) that the option that we did have was both way overpriced and relatively lackluster).

Over the years, however, things have gotten better and both the availability and the quality of the restaurants offering such have increased - and the prices have taken a turn for the better also. Thank goodness for that - but not all sushi places are created equal - and this is why I felt inspired to pass on a couple of recommendations for any sushi lovers visiting the Islands.

The Buffet Option

It should come as no surprise that I like to make the most of buffet meals.

My absolute favorite place here in Malta that also offers buffet would have to be that offered by any Okurama restaurant.

All three restaurants are really good and have their own distinct menus with enough overlap to foster familiarity and yet plenty of restaurant-specific choices - but the one I personally slightly favor would be the original one not far from the 'Portomaso Tower' of 'St Julians'.

I am sentimental like that.

The €27.50 price-tag for the buffet meal is far from cheap - but if you are a foodie who loves their sushi then this is definitely a great way to fill up on such - at least relative to other sushi options on the Islands (which can sometimes run in excess of €50.00 for a decently-sized sushi platter).

Man... even talking about it is bringing on an incessant hankering.

Oh... no - thats not a platter - thats most of the 'first course' of the buffet for two.

I really love sushi... ^_~

And for those wondering, no I do not consider myself particularly hardcore. Chances are that if you like fish and rice then you will enjoy this experience (whether in Malta or in your country).

One thing that you need to know is that they will charge extra for anything you don't manage to eat (so don't overdo it) - but you'll also be able to take the extras home... so... 'shrugs'

Also - if you spend €50 (or was it €30...?) or more and present your car park ticket (specifically) from the nearby Portomaso parking complex - they'll cover most if not all of the parking fee - which is frankly handy if you're driving (a rental?) and trying to park in the vicinity of that area of St Julians.

The Non-Buffet Option

Okurama does also offer an a-la-carte' menu - and also has sushi platters - which can be a more reasonable option for persons who haven't got a big appetite. The platters are good - but the buffet is better for people with voracious appetites.

Of course - there are other places where one can get some decent sushi and a more pocket-friendly price. With price in mind, as of the moment I could only vouch for one other place however.

If I'm hankering some sushi that is good enough and reasonably priced then my current choice is in 'Bugibba' - a restaurant called The Flora.

While its focus is more on the Cantonese or Chinese food - they do have a decent selection of sushi - and with the help of either deal offers that they sometimes partake in, or through use of my 'Malta Discount Card' I can get my food bill down to half-price (and the 10-day variant of my annual card is available to tourists too). Not bad at all. A good way to keep the food bill all the more reasonable is to order the noodles with chicken or beef - as both are quite generously included in the portion.

A note about parking. Its optimal to try to seek parking circa 6pm - as trying any later, will prove more difficult.

To Conclude

There 'are' other places that serve sushi in the Maltese Islands. Other places where one can find pretty good sushi that may even modestly surpass Okurama include 'Zen to Go' in several locations, 'Club Sushi' in St Julians, and 'Genki Asian Cafe' in Msida. They are good - and if you are a person who either has a smaller apetite or doesn't mind a rather expensive food bill - they are quite viable options.

However between Okurama and The Flora - I'd say that 'my' needs are pretty much catered for.

Oh yes. Locations.

Pin-pointed below upon the composite of two maps below, the one with unimportant intermediary areas 'compressed' (I was experimenting) - and a mini-map of the Islands for context. The yellow tags indicate Okurama locations along with an indication of their focus points - they all have good sushi.

What? Why didn't I choose to cover Maltese food?

I probably will - some day... but sushi is what caught my fancy today!
