My experience on Steemit has been nothing short of stellar.
I've posted rather controversial material which hasn't been flagged to death!
However, for those of us who have joined in the past two weeks or so, that haven't been able to register on slack, there was no place we could go to to chat with users, or where we could have recourse to knowledgeable users that could introduce us to the platform.
In other words, there was no central hub of information, and no place to discuss with other users.
I thought perhaps a Steemit dedicated reddit would solve this problem, but Reddit lends itself to censorship far too easily for it to be aligned with the original censorship-free ideas espoused in Steem's whitepaper.
Then I came across @gabi-dumitriu 's project:

To eliminate suspicions of a phishing scam @gabi-dumitriu provided me his LinkedIn profile.

After seeing the numerous works he has been involved with, I have no cause to believe the user to be malicious whatsoever.
Though, for security reasons, I would still recommend signing up with a different email and a different password.
Vision and basic features:

That's the hub of information I was searching for!

What value does socialsteemit add?
- Steem users can collude and exchange ideas on how to improve content.
- True communities can be formed around tags by leveraging efficient communication.
- Steemit infrastructure related information can be dispersed more efficiently - for example when the site is down.
- Private groups for Steem only users can be made, who have proven they own their account, for example through a PGP signature.
- Non-Steemers can offer advertisement partnerships.
- More efficient than facebook because it's focused on steemit, i.e. content is auto-curated for this niche.
