Mentoring One Steemian At A Time

Part of our advocacy is to improve the overall experience of Filipino Steemians. It is that which brought us into doing the SteemPH Meet Up Caravan, it is with that thought in mind that gave birth to @steemnest, and very recently the curation effort through @steemph.curator in collaboration with the sub-communities of @steemph. While trying to find contents to feature for our Daily Featured Posts, we've seen a lot of potential from the #philippines contents, and I wish to really help newer Steemians through an experimental mentoring process; one Filipino Steemian at a time.

Definition

Business Dictionary defines mentoring as:

Employee training system under which a senior or more experienced individual (the mentor) is assigned to act as an advisor, counselor, or guide to a junior or trainee. The mentor is responsible for providing support to, and feedback on, the individual in his or her charge.

For this initiative we seek to help newer Steemians who have been in the platform for less than three months, with reputation score under 55, and have a long term perspective when it comes to the future of Steem and Steemit. This effort is for free, and we will even use our upvotes to indicate progress seen from the mentees. This does not mean automatic support through upvotes for the reason that we would not want the individual to get confused by the objective of this initiative.

The goal first and foremost is to teach, coach, and provide feedback to the mentees. The upvotes will be used only as an indicator of progress, and to reward mentees who show genuine willingness to learn.

The Mentors

We had this thought for a couple of moths now. We've been hesitating about making it public for the reason that this can well be taken negatively with thoughts like, "Who do they think they are to qualify as mentors?". We have finally decided to publish this convinced that there will never be a perfect time, and whatever we do - regardless of the timing - people will have varied thoughts and things to say.

  • @steemitph is a passionate junior executive in the field of outsourcing with fourteen years experience in leadership and business management. He joined Steemit in July of 2017, built reputation within the community through posts about community works, analytics, leadership, Steemit how-to, family, and many other topics he is passionate about. He's at reputation 63 and holds 4,367 Steem Power. The SteemPH Meet Up Caravan is his brainchild which he is doing on behalf of @steemph.

  • @dandalion currently sits at reputation 57, and holds 1,511 Steem Power. @dandalion is a stay at home mother with six years experience in the outsourcing industry prior to making the decision to prioritize taking care of her family. Her passion in teaching earlier exhibited in helping educate her children was brought into the platform through @steemnest.

Project @steemnest on behalf of @steemph aims to create a home for newer Steemians through educational articles about these topics so far:

The couple's goal is to continue to help educate new Filipino Steemians through their efforts via @steemnest and SteemPH Meet Up Caravan. They both feel that something is missing however, and are now convinced that the opportunity is around a real form of follow-through. This initiative to mentor one Steemian at a time is about that exactly.

The Mentee/s

Our preference is to initially open this to Filipino Steemians. The reality is we are still learning ourselves, but there must be somethings we can impart based on our seven months experience in the platform specially to those who are just getting started in their Steemit journey. We are sure that everybody will eventually learn on their own like we pretty much did, but if there is something we could do to hasten the learning curve - we feel it is through some form of mentoring. As earlier mentioned, we are opening this to anyone who's been in the platform for less than three months, with 55 or lower reputation level, and are eager to learn.

The Plan

  • There will be an enrollment period between now and the 14th of March. This will be done via commenting on this post and telling us about why you wish to join the program, and why we would like to pick you as mentee.
  • We will pick two mentees from the ones who enrolled and support them between the 15th and the end of March (2 weeks)
  • The support will be opened by an Ask Me Anything session via video conference between the mentors and the mentees. This is currently planned to be a two hour session.
  • This will be followed by twice a week submission of post that the mentors will review and help improve around overall thought organization, basic grammar, formatting, and overall presentation.
  • The improvements will be discussed on a weekly video conference call which is currently planned to be an hour per session.
  • The mentors will also be available via chat for the whole duration of the program for any queries from the mentees.

We are both very excited to start this initiative and make new friends, but we are most excited about being able to give back to this amazing community one more way. Please let us know your thoughts around how we can improve this program, and we will try our hardest to make adjustments where we can.
